Crepe Paper Recollections [for my brother Robert, and anyone else who recalls just this] streaming colors strung throughout the gym anticipation mounting rumbling school brims ah memories overwhelm in swirling crepery tang of raspberry punch full skirts soundly swishing sly-shy eyed boys in gabardine slacks and young girls blossoming amidst the flowing crepery DJ’s setting up the mike platters of melodies to spin excited voices filled the air and I saw you over there flowing with the crepery wildflower beauty a breath of spring yes you were that existential epitome of sweet young thing but you were wall-flowered not knowing your power and I saw you over there contemplating to stand or take a chair ‘neath the streaming crepery the shyness of you, paradigm mind sharply taking in the scene wanting it to turn into that dream you visited just last ‘eve, of a brown eyed boy in great blue jeans your jade eyes cast about and you flicked the flip in your hair yes, I saw you standing there ‘midst streaming crepery the music began, and giggling, too as partners paired amid the stares of who would dance with who leaving you still wallpapered and I balked to take you in my arms to dance a slow dance with you like we did on the living room floor but you were my older sis and in public that’s not what younger brothers do… ©Karilea Rilling Jungel 30 September, 2000 |

Sunshine, My daughter will be going to her very first middle-school dance in a couple of days! I'm going to show her this, maybe she will understand that many kids share her feelings! I loved it! |

Debbie, my dear, you are so very kind, and I will wait for you to tell me her very words..."O Mom...that was a million years ago..." but I did so enjoy the "kid" part of it... and my brother fondly recalls his dance with me, because he did come over...even though he didn't want to rescue his wallflower sis...but he is an exceptional brother, in his way...
