Our philosophy assignment was to write about the meaninglessness of life, so this isn't really my view on it. Now I'm working on the MEANING of life, which is actually a lot harder, to tell the truth.

why even bother
getting out of bed?
why even try
to clear your head?
why even live
if you'll end up dead?

nothing is wrong
nothing is right
and nothing exists
beyond my sight
meaning is stolen
by endless night

we want to survive
we want to live
but what can we gain?
what can we give?

i only see clearly
when i cry
bottom line:
we live, then die
there's nothing more
so why ask why?

you look for meaning
you try to dream
but there is no future
after this scene
the curtain falls
and you've never been

7,

Boy am I glad this isn't your view   I like this poem..even if it quite depressing.  I have been in this place in the past... and boy am I glad that I have escaped.

and yet another Ecclesiastical verse in the forums within 24 hours... that makes 3... the futility of it all... or 4... it's hard to keep track these days...

ummm... Well, 7, you have definitely put the problem down succinctly in words... we all wonder about this, y'know? great assignment topic and very good follow through... i know i'm no teacher, but if i were, i would have assigned a companion poem or prose... to write about the great meaning of life...

now, when you put the two together, you might really have something dynamic... not that this piece isn't dynamic on it's own...

like flip it, like this:

why make the bed? I just have to pull the covers down at night when i'm ready to go to sleep again. meaningless, futile.

vs.
a beautifully made bed with inviting pillows and textures and colors pulls my mind into thoughts of restful comfort and sleep... damn, it's good to be alive!!

well, you get the idea... there's nothing new under the sun... it's all meaningless and futile....or just maybe it's ALL new... maybe every minute is a new minute that you'll never get to experience again and how precious that is... and maybe within the next minute... when that comes... some great truth and meaning will finally become evident... it's all in how ya look at it, huh?

PLEASE excuse my rambling... and thank you for the read... obviously, your poem was successful because if a poem makes just ONE person think, feel, see things differently, then... guess what? you WON!

great job!
