"Guess who died?"
A stunning blast of words
heard even in my sleep...
and like a soldier hearing Revelry
I flew into alert--
"Give me that."
I snatched
the paper from his hands...
and he stood back, knowing
that sometimes messengers are shot...

I saw her face
upon the page--
and confused familiarity...
I read her name in disbelief
over and over and over,
How can this be?
(how can this be...)
She'd been dead almost a week.

Her services were held
private and discreet...
her mother couldn't stand the sight
of watching
junkies weep
when they never had before...
"They should have cried,
when she was alive..."
embittered,
she locked the door.

So last time that I saw her face,
was on the printed page...
a guilty burden carried
by the thoughtless part I played...
And now I trace
upon her face,
a finger's memory...
sick with the thought
that she had bought
a ticket meant for me.

One way ticket I'd be glad I didn't take!
Sad, but yet thankful in the end. Karen you've written this very well! Grabbed my attention and held me on the edge all the way through!

I am sorry for your loss of your friend and I would do anything I could to take your pain away.  You have penned a tribute to her anyway in your words and just from penning from the heart you have assured that she will live eternally within your verse.  HUGS TO YOU MY "Official" friend.  {{{{HUGS}}}}

serenity,

Got chills just reading this.  Powerful words there my friend.  Sorry to hear about your friend.  Great writing.

Thanking you all for this one feels weird to me...but I do want to let you all know that I appreciate your kindness---this place overwhelms me with the amount of genuine caring that shines through...for THAT I thank you all...

Serenity~
*Hugs* for you in the loss.
Friends are such a precious gifting -
that we can't afford to lose even one
without feeling a part of us stripped away.

Loving you and sending prayerful thoughts.
