*Jeff*

A friend of mine, he likes to skate and likes to rap.
He gets in lots of fights, but I've always got his back.
He's a petty criminal and he's always makin' tracks.
He likes drivin' his mama's car without the license tags.
We took it off-roading right after we got it waxed...
We had to have it towed;
all that sand stopped the Lincoln in its tracks.
He spraypaints too; he likes to leave an autograph
underneath his tags. And always wears the same damn Starter hat.
His front teeth do kind of have some gaps.
But you just gotta look a little closer than that.

We used to hang with a crew back in our neighborhood.
Times were really good; the other kids understood
to move out of the way when they could.
And if they didn't, we taught them they should.
We used to skate all day, up the town, yes, we would tear.
Split to a new location before the cops got there.
Cruise the streets in my Caddy, even thought it has no air.
The city's summer breeze was runnin' through our hair.
And I always took for granted all the time that we had shared.
Thought we'd be friends 'til whatever end.
But now i'm gone, and it's not fair.

I didn't mean to move so far away.
It just kind of happened; like it was yesterday.
And it went by so fast, it felt like just a day.
It's a cruel game of Fate's, and I'm too stressed to play.
It seems every time I start to settle down,
Fate comes around to weed me out.
Right before my roots are in the ground,
I'm uprooted and moved to a brand new town.

And the friendships I had all fall apart.
And it hurts in heart to know that I'm too far
to do a damn thing about
my friend bein' down-and-out.
He lives on the street now; his home is not his house.

You see, his Dad's head was a little messed,
and I think he could've regressed
But i know he was depressed and was
without a way to be expressed.
He found his best relief lay in eternal rest.
He had all this tension in his head
and these words that weren't said.
So instead, he just put his heart to bed
when he squeezed the trigger against his head.
And with this new weight on her chest,
my friend's mom caved in beneath the stress.
He fought with his mother,
Farewell-ed his little brother,
The door slammed and he was left
with his soul and a bag of things.
And now he's on the street,
given up on his dreams,
lookin' for job openings.

And how I wish I was there, man.
To help you up, to help you stand.
I wish I could've been that helping hand.
But still your friend, I am;
Call me up when you can.
Because I know about growing up to fast
man, do I ever understand.
To have the Day come to your door
and be unready to be a man.

Good Luck, Jeff.< !signature-->

like you've had it up to here
'cause you mad enough to scream
but you sad enough to tear...

This is really good...and I know all to well the feeling of being so far from a friend when they need you..and not being able to help.  It hurts.  You expressed your feelings so well..all you can do now is have faith that your friend will find his way..............beth

The people that we pass by everyday, we make judgements of them, and forget that sometimes the ones we tend to shy away from are the ones that need our help the most.  Everyone needs someone to care for them.  I wish Jeff luck in being able to find his home.

thank you all for taking the time to stop by and read this one.

Lady Lost: you hit the nail on the head... thanks for the sentiments.

JM: well hello there! i thought you were locked away! i'm glad you dig this one, 'cause the style's a little different than normal. maybe i'm just getting old and losing my touch...

Waverly917: you're right. Everyone's got their demons. We all got somethin' to atone for. thanks for readin it.

serenity: hey there! thanks so much for the prayers. and you're right. helping hands only take you part of the way.

This is such a sad piece of poetry.  Even sadder because so many people can relate to it.  Very touching, Ethan.  You and Jeff both are in my prayers.

Very nice sentiment to a friend.  I love the simplicity of it, and the feeling put into it.  It made me think about someone I know and care about.

PS Thanks for the great opinion.  I wasn't sure my stuff would match up compared to some of the great poems I've read.  I needed the boost of confidencce.   Melissa (Paper Chains)

Lost your touch? NOT HARDLY...this speaks of the times we live in...how we have become a nomadic society..never putting down roots and giving ourselves a chance to build lasting relationships...and what we put our children thru...your friend is lucky to have you to turn to and you are a very special guy to hold out your hand and welcome him in.
