Never let it be said that I never tried my hand,
For at every opportunity I bled and worked and toiled,
And tried to make reality from dreams, vivid and grand;
But, something external would happen and make my plans spoiled.

Jack of all trades, master of none, college but no degree,
No piece of paper hung and framed, meaning I know squat.
My brother pulls seventy grand per year; I make five if I'm lucky,
And lacking all the material things his salary could have bought.

Just a drifting slacker I'm called, though I work my hiney off,
As they prattle about social responsibility and the Big Picture;
They say I'm good for nothing. When I protest, they scoff.
I may be impoverished in this world; but, in memories I'm richer.

It's not what you make it's what you get to keep. Evidently your memories are worth more than GOLD! I think your poem says so much about who you are and that is enough!!!!!

Well, 'cat, if friends are worth a buck ninety-eight, I'd say you were a rich man.....otherwise, I hope you and your brother are REAL close!

Money's not everything, good sir. Now if I could just convince VISA of that....

This holds lots of truth.   I enjoyed reading it, and agree that you are wealthy in self worth beyond your wildest dreams.   Material things aren't made strong enough, and cannot fill any void, but the ones in the corner of a closet or the extra parking space in the driveway.

My name isn't Baby, and I don't want to cyber.

Money is ok for the necessities..but I would rather write and enjoy the real things in life than 'buy' them! Enjoyed your poem and I don't believe you are the things they say. You are unique, just think of all your adventures (Sturgis!)!!!

Keep writing - keep dreaming!

I believe once I said I loved this. I'll say it again, and put it where more can see it again.

Ah the ways of life and how unfair it can be at times.
Wise words....sad and true.
Well done cat!

inot2B: Thanky...btw, what's the going rate on gold.....

Sir Deer: Heh...then I reckon Visa has the wrong world-view.

Temptress: Yeah, this one is autobiographical, and I have been called both a drifter and a slacker, both as in praise and in derision. But that's ok...it suits me.

PdV: Ooooooo.......STURGIS........gotta wanna havta musta go.......

Angel: *HUGS* You is too sweet...but ya know that all guys only love ya fer one thing...coffee.

Temptress: *mega tickle hugs*

Irie: Life is what ya make it...make mine a double, hold the ice.

Vic: Hey hon...yawp, lots of truth here, and I know we's in the same boat at times...so at least try to paddle the same direction..all these circles is makin me dizzy......Oh, and you'd love my brother. He's tall (6'3"), well-muscled but not overly so, in wonderful shape with red hair and blue eyes, has a snazzy sense of sardonic humor, pulls a healthy income while fiddling with computer networks, and loves kids. Only two snags. He's married. Very married.

I will assumes some truth - and certainly appreciate your decision to avoid the rat race - also that you are young. There may come a time though - when you think of a relationship - and perhaps children - and the rat race will grab you anyhow - ~G~

It comes down to...are you happy? It's not what other's think...although we are raised to believe what others think and say rate more than what we feel or do. if your are happy with your life who cares...I've come to a point where I'd rather have a job that pays all the bills, puts food on the table and lets me have a life. I don't want my job to be a life...so what...you get a gold watch...and they say you were such a nice guy when you're gone. Just please yourself nad the ones you love. Ron
