Night fell
tiptoes on concrete
resound in ears
deaf to all else
as he creeps
stealthy in fuel
to what will end
in the blackness
all have been here
alone wishing silence
a loud hoot call
from the owl above
a revelie to his return
The back gate
swings silent
a well oiled squeak
the key scratches
on a rusted lock
finding its nest
three turns in
click clunk
welcome home
the doors welcome
going unanswered
the boots fall silent
clean washing deadens noise
the stairs not even a creak
the final door opens
"a-hem"
as he enters the lions den

WOW!!!! I can't believe that no one has responded to this one. Very well written, great imagery and I love the little twist at the end. I can just see her standing there waiting for him to come home..."Lions den" is a very good choice of words for what he walks into. By the way, caught the little bit about the hoot owl....right on
