One child, a boy,
now, almost a man
tries to deal with
the absence of a fatherís love
the absence of a motherís care
and the absence of nourishment
for both the body and soul.

He shows a brave face,
itís the little things
that get him down,
and when heís tired and hungry,
and feeling completely alone,
he cries at what the others say
about his clothes... his broken teeth.

He responds to encouragement,
working hard to please.
A teacher who takes the time
to notice his effort,
could truly effect a change
in the self worth and self image
of this seemingly vagabond child.

Whose classrooms did you grace?
How often were you overlooked?
Was your melancholy misread by many,
as sullen dread,
at being forced to learn,
forced to attend school?

In your tired
and too knowing eyes,
I see a thirst for knowledge
and a hunger for things
that will allow you to escape
the taunts and the threats
and the absence of love in your life

This simply broke my heart!

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace." Elizabeth Barrett Browning

This was a student in my class once.  I have more and more like him every year.

If this is/was you, too, A_L, then I hope you realize how important you are as an individual, and as a part of whatever partnership you end up in.  Education is especially important, because we respect ourselves more as we become more educated about the things that interest us.
