Iíve Given All I Had to Give

Iíve given all I had to give
Iíve lived the best that I could live
Iíve loved the most that I could love
Iíve reaped the coo of mourning dove

Iíve been at degredationís door
Iíve helped the hungry and the poor
Iíve played a Motherís loving role
Iíve known the hunger of the soul

Iíve seen the sun rise oíer the bay
Iíve danced a dance in month of May
Iíve soared above the star-lit skies
When first beholding newbornís eyes

Iíve shivered lonely in the night
Afraid to be afraid of light
Iíve pondered those decisions made
For which I dearly, dearly paid

Iíve felt the hollow hunger pain
Iíve walked the streets in windswept rain
Iíve known the joy of passionís bliss
Iíve felt warmth of loving kiss

Iíve manned the helm and held the keel
On Flying Dutchmanís golden heel
Iíve lain alone on marbled floor
While lifeblood from my wounds did pour

Iíve felt the moonlight touch my face
Iíve prayed to God for heavenly grace
Iíve walked the walk in weary plod
While following the steps of God

Iíve been elated at the sight
Of creatureís foot on winterís white
Of crimson, gold and umbered leaves
Of crystal snowflakes on my sleeves

And looking back in retrospect
I have not any one regret
I have not fame or noted wealth
But Iíve been always true to self

But now Iím weak, the end has come
Iím happy with the songs Iíve sung
Iíve given all I had to give
I lived the best that I could live

I catch a glimpse of azure sky
And birds of feather flying by
A rumpled swishing sound they make
I beg to know the course they take

Please step aside and let me through
Iíve so much living yet to do
So many wonders to be seen
So many dreams Iíve yet to dream

Oh, I can see why this is your favorite Elizabeth ... it's wonderful.  I love your theme, your reminiscing, your look to the future ... leaves me feeling quietly contented and peaceful with positive anticipation of what is yet to come after a life well led.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Liz, this is so wonderful! I can see why it's your favorite. If only everyone could live life this fully. Thank you for posting it.

Yes, this is positive while being realistic at the same time. It also showcases the tremendous inner strength and wisdom that you possess. I am honored to be considered your friend.

There's so much to live for...makes me wonder how one prepares for dying.

A life not lived to the fullest is a life not worth living, and you surely seem to have fully lived!

Elizabeth

And this I say to you: why? Why? Just tell me why, so I can understand. Why?
