He said "Hold me before I go baby ...
and promise me you wont cry,"
so I held him like it was forever, and I promised ...
though we both knew it was a sweet lie.

He said "Love me while Im gone baby" ...
and thru my tears, all I could do was smile.
He had heard the angels calling his name ...
we both knew we only had a little while.

So I held him even closer ...
and I tried to quiet all his doubt.
I kissed away his tears that fell ...
from too many years of doing without.

I said "I will always love you baby,
this you already know."
Then he taught me how to hold on to love ...
while still learning to let go.

And I learned there are some wounds ...
that even love cant heal.
And I learned unconditional love ...
was gentle, genuine, and real.

I said "I don't just love you baby ...
I love you desperately."
This kind of love is forever ...
it is born of fate and destiny.

So we held each other tighter,
and we let not one emotion go unspoken.
We learned this love was constant ...
this bond could not, would not be broken.

And I learned that this kind of love ...
could truly set a heart free.
And while I was loving him ...
he taught me ... how to love me.

Sometimes Fate grants you a gift ...
and it gives your life its destination.
And along the way,
you find your self and your heart's inspiration.

Everything indeed ... happens for a reason ...
something's are simply and sweetly just meant to be.
So I loved him like it was my last chance,
and when the time came ... I set my butterfly free.

I loved your heart filled poem.

A loving tribute in written word
Can ease the pain you felt
I’m sorry for your loss
And hope your heart don’t melt

Janet* This is absolutely amazing...your Butterfly inspires the most heart touching pieces in you.  He was a gift from the poetic angels. You have tears in my eyes with this heart touching weave.

Then he taught me how to hold on to love ...
while still learning to let go

And while I was loving him ...
he taught me ... how to love me

So I loved him like it was my last chance,
and when the time came ... I set my butterfly free.

This is from you heart and soul...your muse kicked my muse's @$$!!! on this one sweetie!

Jan,
You always know exactly how to touch my heart. I don't know how you do it...but you do. And you always know exactly how I am feeling. I LOVED this piece. In fact, it is one of my favorites by you. Then again, I have so many. It was hard to choose. lol. But you have written your heart and soul in this one...and oh what a beautiful view it is...even if it is tinged with sadness. I am very happy that this person touched your life in this way. I believe at some point in time we all meet someone who touches us in some profound way. But only a few of us have a love quite like the one you describe here.

Much admiration and love,
Amy

Oh Janet...this touches me deeply right now, because of my current situation.  I'm working on an intensely emotional piece about it, and this poem of yours has truly helped boost my inspiration to hurry up and get it finished!  I know all too well, that feeling of holding someone like it's your last time...you described that tenderness so sweetly.  Your heart is beautiful when it's pouring out, girl.  And yes, sometimes we learn more from a few precious moments with a butterfly in our hand, than a lifetime of holding nothing at all. And sadly, the most beautiful part, is when they take flight to leave us.  That old country song comes to mind, (I'm sure you know it)  goes something like..."If I never love again, at least I knew love, cause baby, I was loved by you..."  ACK That wasn't even close, but you probably know what I'm talking about.  I'm thinking Garth, or Randy??  Naw...Clint Black?  HELP!  Anyways....beautiful poem girl.  Glad you can see the brighter side of freeing love, and knowing it truly.

thank you to each one of you who took the time to read and reply to this.
PLEASE know I am deeply touched by your words
and I felt the sincerity in these wonderful replies.
I am still daily awed that my work can
evoke this kind of emotion...
I am overwhelmed and grateful beyond words-by the love, and respect I am shown here daily.
I thank you from my heart.

Oh, JM, I love this!  It reminds me of the movie Phenomenon...loving someone who is dying, holding on to them and letting them go.  Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!

Sweet Janet this is as golden as you are.
Butterflies are so beautiful and delicate and your poem was every bit a butterfly.
You have set yours free but you have those beautiful and tender moments to hold onto and remeber.
Lovely poem jm like all yours are

I think I could need - this in my life
I think I'm just scared - that I know too much
I can't relate and that's a problem
I'm feeling ...
If you're gone - maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone - baby you need to come home
cuz there's a little bit of something me...
In everything in you.
