The first line of a poem I wrote
Was “To be or not to be”
What’s that you say, Shakespeare wrote that?
Well, I really thought it was me!

Perhaps this line was my first
“She was a Phantom of delight!”
William Wordsworth wrote that line!?
Are you sure that you are right?

I must have written down that verse
My first, my premiere line
Those lines are great, perfect words
Could only come from deVine!

“Gaily bedight, a gallant knight”
The first line of my poem “Eldorado”
Oh, are you sure it was penned
By Edgar Allan Poe?

What was the line I wrote
In the first poem I ever created
Thrown out because I was sure
When read, it would be hated.

I think back to that innocent time
To the year when I was eight
No words are in that memory
They are lost by an act of fate.

"The caring prayers, the shaking shock" was my first line, and it better not be (supposedly) someone else's!   Too bad you don't have your first poem, PdV, we're missing out on something!

Elizabeth

And this I say to you: why? Why? Just tell me why, so I can understand. Why?

Thank you! I have been reading everyone's first poem and decided to write this. I didn't start writing poetry seriously until I was 35! I do have my first, but it's not suitable for this forum!

Totally endearing.  The tender age of 8...innocence before it crosses that final threshold.

I used to get a lot of my best images from different poems or even songs. Anyway a clever poem,  lovely enjoyed the read.

I think back to that innocent time
To the year when I was eight
No words are in that memory
They are lost by an act of fate.

Wonderful response in the spirit of "the first poem" Poet deVine!  I'm so glad you picked up the pen at 35 ... this was terrific!
