I wrote this poem when I was seventeen...many years ago.

                This Day

On this day of years gone by
of many minutes passed,
the memory of a sunset gold
in memories will not last,
for sunsets are the symbol of
another day gone by,
and always those that bring new days
are first to meet the eye.

Minutes are for those who wait,
and those who let them pass,
with sixty seconds every one
until their days are done, at last.
This seems to me a useless task
for those who like to count,
for what are minutes in a life
that’s lived for no account.

When days go by I am not sad
for age is but the task,
of counting all the wisdoms learned
from moments in the past,
for life at last is all
that you would have it be,
and only those who know this fact
have truly lived, you see.

Martie this is fabulous...
what a cool and insighful poem, questioning and reasoning lifes view.
and I smiled noticing you rhymed back then,  (thinking of your last post)
this is so great to get to see all of these poems. take care, jm

that have never been touched.
There are places inside our hearts ...
that need to be loved this much.

What a wise 17 year old you must have been.  This is such an elegant way of saying your life is what you make of it.  Great writing.

Martie, this was fabulous!  Challenge well met!  I really enjoyed this poem.  At 17, your insights were already so astute, and your poem had such depth ... I can see many of your same qualities continue to flourish in your other works I've read here.

Thank you so much for digging deep and finding an early treasure!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Did you mean to say when you were only 17 times smarter than the average human?? This is great, Martie. I was still writing about Dick and Jane at 17

Very impressive, Martie! This one is filled with wisdom well beyond that of most at that age, myself included.

Thanks everyone...this was fun, but you know, if I was so wise at seventeen, how come I did so many stupid things? I was also cynical.

Another early one was:

Vacuous valves
of empty headed men
being turned on
spewed forth banana peels,
I slipped on one
and hurt my heart.

Wow!!!! I also like the one in your reply...slipping on man's banana peel. Great answer to the challenge....I still think you are wise as anything and when you wrote this poem were wise as anything.

Love and hugs,
Lizzie
