he called outside my window
in chorus with dawn's breaking
a harsh dee-dee-dee
the notes floating rhythmically
lofted by the breeze
tangled through the trees
around the corner
through my open window
to tickle me awake
as I lay
nestled on a soft pillow
tucked under a quilt
eyes barely awake
but mind functioning
as I lay
listening to our daily routine
and unable to deny my need
to watch him
I stealthily crept to my secret spot
where I could observe
without being seen
and there he sat
just like all the other mornings
this last week
waiting
waiting
until no-one is watching
waiting
to fly to his nest
with a fat worm for his babies

I, in my stake-out
had even determined
he was a he
for this tiny bird
was bold and brash
calling attention to himself
with funny little antics and trills
he, the hunter-gatherer
comes to nest
with the morning's spoils
in a flourish of feathers and song

and I, the human spy
feel an incredible longing to fly

Very beautiful, Heather! Thanks for sharing your delightful morning! It would be great to fly, wouldn't it?!
