Up above the treeline,
...lays the Great Divide,
Above the clouds where eagles soar,
...and cowboys never ride.

He'd lost his horse in Rincon Pass,
...a rattler spooked his bay,
To the north sat Mill Creek Valley,
...where his bunkhouse lay.

He took off in well worn boots,
...he walked as crow would fly,
On a bleak September morn,
...where mountains meet the sky.

Was three o'clock when first he felt,
...snow's sting upon his face,
Slicker fastened, red bandana,
...quickened up his pace.

By four the winds were howling,
...no bootprints left behind,
He knew if he were to survive,
...some shelter he must find.

Left his saddle by a rock,
...his mark etched in its side,
High atop Diablo Mountain,
...no where left to hide.

Down below in Mill Creek Valley,
...Cookie rang the bell,
Beans and beef, hot cornpone fritters,
...water from the well.

At end of bench, an empty setting,
...nary drew a glance,
A cowboy's life is mighty rough,
...a man just takes his chance.

Up above the treeline,
...lays the Great Divide,
Above the clouds where eagles soar,
...and cowboys never ride.

Beside a rock, a well worn saddle,
...marks where a cowpoke died,
Headstone to forgotten cowboy,
...an X etched in the side.

A great tale Mike...wonderful discription and  repeating the first stanza again in the second to last...perfect! I am again amazed by your versatility.

Mike~
A cowboy tale to rival the best of the rest.
Wonderfully written ... captured me through to the end.  Kept hoping he'd make it ... knowing he wouldn't.

You sure have a powerful bunch of muses.
Great tale.
