She was a picture of beauty, hair of gold and eyes of green
He told her she was the loveliest woman he had ever seen

She grew her hair long and worked at her degree endless hours each day
He told her how he loved what she had done with her hair today

She clawed and fought to attain the goals in her life
He told her how lucky he was to have such a beautiful wife

She gave night and day wanting to bring joy to those around her
He said he loved the envy of men when he walked in the room with her

She longed to hear he was proud of her inside and  with beauty To Hell!
He kept telling her how much he adored her “perfect” outer shell

She asked him if he would love her scarred and old
He told her of doctors with medical miracles to behold

She stopped dressing up and pulled her long hair back
He told her she was letting herself go...had she lost the knack

She became the inner woman SHE had always wanted to be
He told her if she would just try she could again be lovely

She cut her hair and took a natural glow that would not dim
As he left she heard him say she must have never loved him

Happiness can only be obtained when we can shed out outer shell and become what we really are. Thank you for reminding us!

Oh my, so much needs to be said about "inner" beauty... I think you nailed it here, though.  Wonderful work, BDC.

ya got me good with this one...
I shook my head while reading...
recalling the conversation about this...
you really expressed this perfectly...
some are just too blind to see.
excellent writing from that place with-in...
your shell is beautiful because of the glow from your heart.
take care, SS
love ya, jm

 It's amazing
How you make your face just like a wall
How you take your heart and turn it off
How I turn my head and you lose it all ...
And it's unnerving
How one move just puts me by myself
There you go just trusting someone else
Now I know I put us both through hell ...
I'm not sayin
That there was nothing wrong
I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me
And I'm not sayin
We ever had the right to hold on
I just didn't wanna let you get away from me.

Wow!  This really touched on a big issue that I personally have.  After all, you can only hear so much about the outer you, which isn't really you at all.
Inside all of us is a beautiful person that only few experience.  Thank you for the insight of my day in a truly expressive fashion.

  Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence.

Much to ponder here Butterflies ... I found this very thought-provoking, as the years seem to take their toll in my slowly aging mirror. I enjoyed this!

Best wishes,

Wow, now this is a gem and so very well written!  As cliche as it sounds, true beauty should be what's on the inside rather than what's on the outside, thanks for reminding us all of that simple truth.    There's a great power in your words!

Take care,

Wow!  I love this!  We do have to be true to ourselves.  You've done a remarkable job as always.  I just love you!

Holly, m'dear, you astound me.  Such perception!  treu beauty is not in what the eyes see, but in what the heart feels.  The eyes can lie to you, and be fooled, but the heart beats true!   I love this!!!!!

B.D.C.,

You have outdone yourself this time, my friend!!  Excellent!!!  True beauty comes from within, not what is on the outside.  That is meaningless in the end.

Holly* It's probably and easy thing to fall into...when we meet, our first sense to take over is sight....but we need to move past that to the heart.  Thank you for reading!

Terry* Yes, vision can be deceived and can fade but the beat of trueness comes from the heart.  Thank you so much!!

L.W. It's amazing to me how much time effort and money "we" spend on the outside and never once look at the inside for change...Thank you so much for reading

Excellent poem...so well written--so sad a love that is not love and the beauty inside lost to superficial eyes...her gain and his loss.

I was reading this again and its such an important and a lovely message.  I have missed out on so many opportunities for friendship because my focus has been on outer beauty.   James
