I Will Take Care of You

We met upon the brink of youth
In a place so far away
The pain that then encased my heart
Still lives a bit today

He said don’t ever worry
For whatever may ensue
Remember that from this day forth
I will take care of you

We walked together down life’s road
For thirty years as one
And often spoke about the battles
We had lost and won

Then one more challege faced us
As disease came into view
He said don’t worry, I’ll be here
To take good care of you

This illness daily takes a bit
Of strength along the way
But I was so content to know
He’d be with me each day

Now fate has turned another page
And changed our destiny
I said you promised you’d be here
To take good care of me

He said I always keep a promise
This you know as true
My spirit will be with you here
And I’ll take care of you

Elizabeth Santos

a beautiful poem, I hope the illness that you spoke of in the forth verse was not serious.

Liz: I have no doubt that you will indeed take care of each other, when you are prepared to work at being a couple and all the ups and downs that will naturally follow you can't be anything else, but a couple...you have done it for 30 years and you will fight this 'together' as you have fought all your other battles and come through it knowing you love and share and bring comfort to each other.

Bless you both...you're very much in my thoughts.

This is so touchingly lovely, and terribly sad.  It is especially so, since I know the story behind it.  I'm so very, very sorry.  You're both in my thoughts, prayers, and tears.

Elizabeth,
Written as only you could write this. The soul of you has spoken here. It has wrung a
bell that sounds into heaven. And it will touch the souls of all whom have the good fortune to know you. Love Sy

Thank you all for such heart warming responses to this poem. I haven't been able to write lately, this is about it, I'm afraid. WE are on our way to see another oncologist this morning, to see where to go from here. I appreciate your comments. I appreciate your love

There would be tears running down my face even if I thought this was fiction, for it's so heartbreakingly beautiful. Knowing the truth, words fail me except to say you have our love and prayers.

Dearest Liz,

This is so heart wrenching...the pain and fear you must be feeling. You and Tony are in my thoughts and prayers all the time. The love that comes through in this poem is so beautiful, it leaves me very moist-eyed.

Love and hugs,
Lizzie

Elizabeth...mere words cannot convey the emotion in this work. You are daily in my thoughts and prayers with this battle that you and Tony are facing. I wish there was a way to help as no one should face this alone. Love always and lots of hugs.... Shawna

I guess I've been putting off opening this one, Elizabeth - it had to be soooo deeply emotional... and yet you're equally as strong - Hold onto these words, my friend - They'll carry you both far..
