               Drifting

  I sometimes find I’m drifting
     Through this life without effect;
I often wonder if I’m truly
      Worth what I’ve been blessed.

I search through days that have been hard,
      To try to understand,
The many trials that I have known,
The life that I have had.

You see me in my daily grind,
      So confident and strong;
Yet when I am alone, I question
      Just where I belong.

I often try too hard I find,
      To analyze and  guess,
  To scrutinize, investigate,
      My life I will confess.

For somewhere deeper, there must be
      Some meaning to this life,
Some way to make a difference,
Give a reason for this strife.

  Is there some hidden meaning?
      Some agenda to be found?
  A greater purpose waiting
If I care to hang around?

It teases and it taunts me,
      Always slightly out of sight;
A hazy vision out of reach,
      Where darkness hides the light.

  I struggle to bring clarity
      To what awaits me there,
  And yet this weak illusion
     Always fades before my stare.

It seems the harder that I try,
      To focus through the haze,
Just serves to add more questions,
      Through my endless, tired gaze.

Perhaps I’m trying just too hard,
     To understand it all,
For can we ever truly know
Just what we have in store?

  Each incident, each moment passed,
      Just adds upon the next,
But in the end, will I find truth …
      Or will I be perplexed?

  Perhaps I make it harder
Than it has to be sometimes,
But will my searching bring to me
      My “meaning” over time?

Or will it leave me broken,
And confused as I feel now,
  While questions bring no solitude,
      To this, my wrinkled brow.

Kit,
Just what would we do if we knew what was in store?  I too search for where my place is, what I was meant to do, to contribute.  What have I ever done that really meant anything?  I do know this - your poetry is touching, and speaks right to my heart, as I'm sure it does to others.  I don't know if that's enough, but it is something, and it's pretty important to me.  Thanks for sharing these feelings.  I know they're difficult to express, and you've done a remarkable job of putting them on paper.  We all have our niche.  I'm sure of that.  Ours should be even sweeter because of the wait.
Lori

Life is not easy nor is it always sweet (believe me I know) but I believe the meaning is in the journey. We too often seek the meaning of life in some final conclusion but it is always in the journey and in our learning.

Nice work.

Life is full of so many questions without answers...and we have this longing need to know.  Well written poem--full of thought (that's a good thing!).

Somethings we won't get the answers to or understand until we get to the other side. I also tend to over analyze situations and happenings and get frustrated when no answer seems forthcoming. That is when I finally come to the realization that some things just need to be left in the providence of God. That's probably the best place for them, anyway, I figure. Excellent poem, Kit! Very well done.

Oh, Kit~
This is a beautiful render for thought.

If we knew all the answers, there'd be no need for the journey.
I've often found that when I went searching, I ran into dead ends ... when I stood still, that which I was searching for came my way.

I spend my search in a time-honored Cherokee ritual called a Vision Quest.

It is the sitting quietly and opening self to the visions that the spirits bring and lay at our feet.  The experience renders me a vessel into which the spirits pour the knowledge that I must know ... I come away from these serene times with the need to share the things I've learned.

So much of who I am has been gleaned from sitting the Vision Quest with spirits of my forefathers.

I guess we all search in our own ways ... as long as we know when we've found the answers are we content with the search.

Some days are harder than others.  That is when I know that I must go outside of the circle of me ... and join another in their search.

You've penned some very worthwhile thoughts here ...
I hope it's read by many.
Thank you for sharing this.

Kit,
I have to go with Marge on this one. . .if we knew all the answers, then the journey wouldn't be half as fun. . .of course, we'd know when the bad parts came up too, but how we respond to them makes us better people. . .

Want to know why you're here?  Stop for a sec and listen. . .hear that?  That's why you're here. . . and why you're HERE.

Excellent poem my friend. . .

I find that life is merely this...."Life is composed of those events which take place while we make plans for the future."  So as long as we plan...and direct our way we find our path to be lead to our goals....But know well....That the path is wide...BUT...the gate is narrow.

This poem flows very well and with thoughts and expression.  I like it

A man does not love a woman because she is beautiful...But she is beautiful because he loves her.

First Knight coined the meaning of "life" quite well.  And, personally, I find greatest fulfillment, along that path, in touching the lives of others as positively as possible, exactly as you have done here with this most beautiful poem.  Thank you!

Well, I kind of like the way you try to hard. Good picture, nice flow, good thought provoking material. I'll have to have lunch at your place more often... What's on the dinner menu..?
