Each One a WinnerThe sweet southern pride in bluegrass hearts fills well beyond containing When low, the bugle's trumpeting starts The Call to the Post refraining With reverence, hushed, the crowd grows still to witness timeless gracing, The splendid show of Nature's thrill as horses now take their placing "And they're off!" we hear, tradition rings as pulses roar in pounding While the next two minutes, our history sings, with frenzied cries resounding And though garland of roses respectfully placed, regal custom to victory's prancing, each thoroughbred has honored this elegant race on this day of Kentucky romancing  Claire |

Oh, Claire~ What a thrill for me to read this. I've owned thoroughbreds in the years past and one of the horses in the Kentucky Derby today was bred and owned by the first trainer I ever had at the Florida racetracks. Harold Rose and his wife, Elsie ... owned the horse named Hal's Hope ... even though it didn't win the race it sure put up one heck of a pace ... leading for darned near three-quarters of the race before tiring. How sweet were the many years of racing for this wonderful couple. Thank you for this timely post. Harold is now 83 years old and his 'Run For The Rose's' was the culmination of a dream come true. Just to run in this prestigious race is a victory in itself. I'm going to share your poem with them. They will be so pleased. Claire, do you know how long I've waited for someone to see the Derby in this way? This is a wonderful poem. . . sure we hear about the "Run for the Roses". . . but what about the Kentucky Bluegrass? The mint juleps? The ladies decked out in their best hats? The noble and beautiful horses? You've covered it all here. . . Denise...thank you! Marge...so nice to hear about your friends, yes I know the horse you speak of...I believe he came in 16th and ran a wonderful race! I would be honored for you to share this with them...please feel free. So glad you enjoyed. Sven...exactly. The Derby has always been a lovely and important tradition for my family.
