I Thought I Knew - by Lori Lockheart

What happened to us?
I thought I knew.

You were my everything.
You held my world in the palm of your hand,
and you never even knew it.

I knew you loved me,
but I thought I was just a something,
instead of an everything.

I thought I knew.
So I let you go.

But not the loving, the longing, or the aching.

I thought I knew.
It was for the best.

And now, after all this time,
Iím finally looking into the blue of your eyes again,
and you tell me,
you tell me I was your everything.

How can that be?
I thought I knew.

What happened to us?
If I was an everything, and you were an everything,
why donít we have something now?

Itís surprising to me.
The softness, the sensuality, the yearning, and the love,
itís still there.

Does it matter?

We canít happen to each other.
I have no right to you,
and you certainly have none to me.
That right belongs to another.
Another who wears a ring,
and vowed I am his everything.

All this time, I thought I knew,
so Iíve been able to live without you.

But Iím still captivated by you,
and it does matter.

Everything has been missing for all this time,
my everything.
And I didnít even see it until tonight,
yet there it is.

Your eyes, your smile, just your way,
has taken my breath, my senses.
And here I am again,
right back in the palm of your hand Ė intoxicated.

You are still my everything.
And we do have something

Between us.

But I canít get something for nothing,
and everything is here with you.

What happened to us?
I thought I knew.

And now, now what do we do?

In a life filled with confusion
The only calm that can be found
Is within the soul of a genuine heart.
Nice writing Lori, I enjoyed it!

First let me say Welcome to Passions. This is a great first post. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I think you will find this place to be like a family.

All my love,
Jeffrey

This is a lovely entrance into the
family of Passionate poets.

Longingly done with style.
Welcome to Passion's.

LORI, HI and add my welcome to the list,
and I am so taken with this poem...
you wrote my heart in this piece.
so very well written and thought out...
and you ask so many of loves hardest questions...let me know if ya find the answers...Im still searching.
take care, jm

 It's amazing
How you make your face just like a wall
How you take your heart and turn it off
How I turn my head and you lose it all ...
And it's unnerving
How one move just puts me by myself
There you go just trusting someone else
Now I know I put us both through hell ...
I'm not sayin
That there was nothing wrong
I just didn't think you'd ever get tired of me
And I'm not sayin
We ever had the right to hold on
I just didn't wanna let you get away from me.
