**  Just a note:  I've never begged anyone to read my poetry, but if you only read ONE of my poems,  I hope that it is this one, especially if you're a parent.  I have been reading a wonderful book called "Parenthood by proxy"...I highly recommend it to anyone with children.  Our children are crying out to be seen and heard, and we as parents, are so caught up in our busy lives, our careers, our lovelives, our own "quiet" time, we hardly give them the time of day - instead, they're turned over to commercial babysitters most of the day, and at night, we're still too busy to spend time with them, thus we "plant" them in front of a computer or television, in hopes they stay "out of our way" a bit longer.  We will pay for our neglect - we are already beginning to reap what we have sown in our children....hear the children - they're starving for someone to notice them.

" Hear the Children "

All throughout the world we hear their cries -
See the lonliness, it's in their eyes...
Neglected and ignored day after day,
and yet we wonder what is wrong today....?

Why our youth are violent, lashing out -
They're filled with anger, bitterness & doubt...
Are their parents in their lives, or unaware?
Do they hear their pleas, or do they even care???

We the parents, busy all day long -
Too caught up in our problems - this is wrong!
Our children beg for just a little time,
a goodnight kiss - a short nursery rhyme...

"I'm busy now!", is all they ever hear -
They go to bed alone, and it is clear...
A "priority", they are not, to mom and dad
they fall asleep ignored and feeling sad.

Hear the children, let them know you care -
Be available to talk, and be aware...
They're starving to be noticed, spend some time
alone with them - a bath, a nursery rhyme.

Let them know that they're important too -
Not just an item on your "List of Things To Do."
Neglected and ignored day after day...
We the parents of this world must start today!

- - Spend some extra time with your kids today...don't turn them away because you're doing something "important"...What could be more important than them??
Hear the children....

I must say Amen to this one.  There is nothing so positive in a childs life then some "quality" time with their parents. And you know what, it's a two way blessing.  I found out when I was down and out it doesn't take much of anything to make a child smile... a little time is all it takes.

Very well said, Gen.

My god! an adult that not only hears but listens too! you are such a rarity of the species of parents. this was fabulous and well written. i love it and i hope more folks will learn to understand instead of condemning. Thanks from the bottom of the hearts of a generation.

hehehe  My "trio tribe" again, plus Tracie!  LOL  I know now who all was up late last night, besides me!  LOL  Michael, you have the most awesome son of all, so I know you can relate.  You two are good together, don't ever forget that.  You have that special bond, that should never be broken...and I repeat NEVER.  Nothing should come before a child's needs.  That book I'm reading, I tell you, it's really set me straight.  She says that NOTHING should take you away from your child, each child has a right to have their parents there for them.  Physically & emotionally.  No career, no financial gain, no new "lovelife"....she says no to all these things.  Children first...always!  We the parents, and our needs, come 2nd.  Tell Mikey I love him!!

Mr. Halo - -  (I like calling you that!)  LOL  Your reply really touched me in a deep way.  Probably because I know you know all too well, that pain.  I am honored that you appreciate my words.  If I could reach out to every neglected child out there, I would.  Unfortunately, my arms aren't long enough...but I will continue to touch as many as I can.  Thank you sir.

Janet - - LOL at your first comment!     You make me blush!  hehehe  Thank you, and I do feel very passionately about this issue.  We are raising "herds" of children out there, who don't even know how to love or connect to other people...they grow up isolated, ignored, and angry for not knowing how to love - how to hold someone, and do you know what kind of impact that has on their self-worth?  When they know they weren't even important enough for their parents to notice them? How can they possibly function among others, and believe in themselves or love??  Isolation breeds devastion - not love.

Tracie - - Thank you too, for sharing this passion.  I sense that you know the importance too.  Glad you enjoyed the message.

"Laugh and the world laughs with you..." cry, and you're all alone. My version - pFF

Gen...this is an important message your words speak in this piece and one that should be plastered on every peditrician's office throughout the country. Thanks for caring enough to speak for those who sometimes can not speak for themselves. God Bless

Thank you Gen for pointing out what should be obvious to all of us as parents.  It's not just the parents though.  Our teachers are being fired for getting involved in their students lives.  Students are being suspended for witnessing to other students (Newsweek I think).  There is a large outcry here not just to the parents but to society.  A society that used to pride itself on Boy Scouts of America and Church Leaders now makes a running joke of both the church and organized kids activities due to a few bad apples.  Makes you wonder where we are going doesn't it.  Maybe now they can see why I wasn't surprised by Columbine and only greatful that it wasn't much much worse.

PoetFemmeFatale,
This is a very important message that you are getting across, and I agree with you 100 %.  We do have to listen to our children even more.

PoetFemmeFatale,
I, too, must agree with you on this important issue.  We do have to listen to the children more.  After all, aren't we the most important people in their lives?  Very good poem.   Thank you for sharing it!

pFF, may we make this poem mandatory reading for anyone wanting to become a parent?  The answer to reducing violence and teen suicide may be written in your poem....it is so plain, but noone listens or cares ....their too busy keeping up with the jones and playing with their retirement portfolios....
~~this one gets a fast trip back to the top~
excellent writing!

I am too but a son, my parents are divorced and I feel so lost all of the time... Whenever I get attention it is from my mother yelling at me or something like that for something that was not my fault... I wish that my mother would listen to me to read this or something, I have always felt lost and afraid and I think it comes from having two abusive parents and a brother who turned out like a carbon copy of my father who was an alcoholic and abusive...

~Gen

*APPLAUSE AND A STANDING OVATION!!!* This was very well done, to say the least. It is apparent to me that you feel as strongly about this topic, as I. We wonder why society is the way it is? You have captured the answers with such poetic brillance! We don't make time for our children...hell what's five mins to tell a child u love them or to read them a book, toss a ball to them...but we are like you said so caught up in our own lives, that we don't even consider how we make them feel. I am not a Mom yet...but I vow that when I do have children...they will be the MOST important thing in my life, or I won't have any. Thanks for posting this, and letting your feelings and thoughts on this matter be heard. You have not only my support but my respect!

Take care,
Amy

This poem sholud be posted all over the country. The children are our future, we seem to forget. I don't have any kids but my heart aches for all the ones neglected. I work at the Children's Home and feel so much for the kids. They always reach out in ways that amaze me everyday. Bless you for this poem. ACT.
