Author's Note:  This is actually a poem that I wrote a few years ago.  It doesn't follow the rules of the "I Am" challenge - I will write one to follow the rules later on.  But, the "I Am" challenge brought it to mind.

      Epitaph

Read me
The story of my life
My hopes and dreams
My doubts and fears
Inscribed on parchment
Which shall endure no longer
Than my mortal body

Hear me
The quiet whisper
Of a frustrated man
Who dreamed of greatness
But achieved only mediocrity
And who utterly failed
To make the world a better place

See me
The inner me
The beauty and goodness
Locked deep within my heart
Struggling to break free
Always searching, but never finding
The way to shine forth

Remember me
And the times that we shared
The smiles and laughter
The sorrow and tears
And know, always
That even though I accomplished little
I always tried

Your poem is written so well and dives so deep into your soul. Sometimes we don't realize the impact we have on others and we go on in life thinking we accomplished not near as much as we wished we could have, when actually we may have done lots more without even knowing. I bet this is true with you.

I'm sure your words will long after you are gone, Troy. Also, you do shine! This is a wonderful heartfelt piece you have written here!

Troy ----this is touching -- and deep.

You are not mediocre ----You will live
on long after you have decided to leave
this world ------on the lips of many a poet,
on your children's and their children's
and on your grave stone ------You have made
a difference --
And will continue to do so --------greatness
comes from inside ------------and you have
one of the biggest hearts that I know.

You have made a difference in my life.

Thank you all for your kind responses!

Jeffrey - thanks, buddy!  I love you man, LOL!

Alicat - thank you!  I'm working on my poem for the challenge, right now - hope to have it done today.

DestinysCharm - thanks so much for the encouragement!  If I can touch others the way that I have been touched and blessed by all the other poets here, I will feel that I have accomplished something wonderful, indeed!

Denise - thank you for your kind thoughts!  I think that at the least, I'll live on through my daughter, and the lullabye that I wrote - which I sing her to sleep with.

Teresa - WOW!  Thanks, that means a lot to me!  I hope you know how precious your friendship is to me, my dear friend!  From one big heart to another, here's a {{{HUG}}} back!

Again, thank you all for your wonderful comments!

Fret not, my friend if all your poems are as good as this one is, rest assured that the world is made a better place by you leaving your poetic trails behind

most heart-wrenchingly honest...I enjoyed
