Roll Call
~*Marge Tindal*~

A lonely rank of fighting men
lay dead upon the shore.
They came, they saw, they conquered,
but they encountered more.

A far and distant battle,
in a bleak and desolate land.
He fights the battle for you,
a gun clutched in his hand.

A lonely rank of fighting men
lay dead upon the hill.
They don't know they're heroes
and I guess they never will.

When the final trumpet's sounded
it will deafen every ear.
The repetitious answer

+ + + not here + + +

+ + + + not here + + + +

+ + + + + not here + + + + +

*A tribute for Jeffrey Carter's challenge
to the men who fought the senseless lingering battle of Vietnam.

This was originally written for my big brother,
who survived the horrors of this war to return home to us.
Too many of his buddies weren't that fortunate.

I have seen 'The Wall' ... and I thank God that
my brother's name is not etched on it.

Marge,
Tears are flowing as I type this reply. Thank you for posting this. Too many people do not understand the absolute horror war brings. Not only to the men and women who fight the battles on the front lines, but also the men and women fighting the battles at home. Thank you for caring.

All my love,
Jeffrey

Little Hoot~
Thank you, hon.
It's a big piece of my heart for sure.
So GOOD to 'see' your smiling face.

Jeffrey~
Thank you for the reminder.
I just sent this, again, to my brother.
His tears are also flowing in remembrance of those friends who died at his side.
This poem has been widely distributed at Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs all across the nation.
It is adaptable to every war situation.

My letter of appreciation from, then President, George W. Bush has to be the ultimate sense of just how far this poem has gone. The Persian Gulf war was raging and he took time to write me a personal letter of thanks for expressing the feelings of so many of us.

My pride is in knowing that the surviving veterans families have requested this poem to share with others.
Thank you, Jeffrey.
All my love to you, hon.
Hugs from my heart to yours.

IrishRose~
Thank you also, hon.

Marina~
I'm really pleased that you like it.

Marge* You've captured the true essence of memorial in Washington D.C. I saw it many years ago but carry the haunting feeling of it with me, such a sad senseless tragedy of lost souls, and the cause of so much pain for the survivors and families.  Your abounding love of so many amazes me...you can touch so many on so many subjects and do them all justice..how does one heart hold it all so well????  *hugs*

 Hold me for yesterday
Kiss me for tomorrow
But love me for today.

YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
and so is this poem.
most of all-- your heart and conviction...
this is obviously something very important to you.
you shine in this...
take care, jm

Is it too much to find an answer,
Is it too much to hold you close.
Is it too much to find a reason,
Is it too much to free my soul --
From self control ...
And I know you're always waiting for me ...
You take me far away,
And I know you're holding me ...
And it's better now ...

Great Tribute Marge. I find this subject
painful - it was such a senseless war,
I am so glad your brother returned to you.
Mine were too young for vietnam, thank
God for that. -----And as each of my
son's now sign up for the "draft"

I think GOD 'dont' let history repeat itself"

This poem has touched me with sorrow....wonderful way to honour all those who did and did not make it.

Love and hugs,

Walt~
I thank the good Lord that there is you.

NetSwan~
Indeed, it is painful when we have to remember that so many gave their lives.
Thank you for the comments.

Rex~

Marge, i must get up very early to get ahead of you.  I have a poem on the drawing board about the Vietnam Memorial Wall.  Have visited the Wall several times and it never fails to move me to silence and sadness. I stopped working on this poem to do one on the Oklahoma City bombing.  Anyway, i will probably be posting my "Wall Poem" in a few days.
You did an excellent job with yours!
Best wishes,,,,

Marge, I find it very difficult to respond to Viet Nam poems but I couldn't let this one go by without saying thank you...not only for the words but because I know you mean them.

Jeffrey~
For whatever reason, I STILL cannot post a reply to your original challenge post ...
So I'm putting it here !

My precious Jeffrey~
This moved me so.
I thank you for your heart.
My tears also fall.
Love you.
~*Marge*~

Danny~
Thank you, darlin'
I will look forward to your post.

Balladeer~
You are right ... it isn't easy to
find the words to reply to these sad
posts.

Every year, as I attend memorial services
for the war victims' survivors, I am reminded just how difficult it is to speak at all.  I cry ... and know that my tears
come from deep respect for the losses.
Thank you, sweetheart.
