She wears a coat of many colors
a patchwork of her life.
Memories of days gone by
as daughter, mother and wife.

Her mother’s well worn apron here,
here daughter’s favorite skirt,
a piece of vest her son always wore,
and a piece of her husband’s shirt.

Her mother died quite suddenly
with a painful disease of the heart
her daughter ran away that year
and her life seemed to fall apart.

Her husband worked longer hours
so alcohol became her friend.
Her son went off to fight a war
a foreign bullet was his end.

What money she has is used for drink,
and she eats only if it’s free.
Her hands flutter and touch her coat
invoking images of what used to be.

Days and nights spent on the street
curling up at night on a stair
dreaming of a former life
filled with tenderness and care.

I can't recall the last time I read a more poignant piece of writing, Ms. Poet...this is absolutely superb.

PD...this poem is SO well written ...
I am very moved by the emotions and images of this piece ...
oustanding work here!!!
take care, jm

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

PDV This is an amazing piece, I've never seen anything like it you've answered the often unanswered question of one life..."how did you come to be homeless" You have an amazing gift and I thank you so much for sharing it.

Thank you for your kind replies. It seems the issue of homelessness was a 'cause' a few years ago and now has been pushed to the background. There are still a lot of people who, for one reason or another, do not have a stable place to lay their head at night. It's amazingly easy to become homeless, given the right circumstances....

Devine you bring tears to my eyes! What you say is true. We're all only a pay check away from being in the same position. Only by the Grace of God am I where I am today!

So beautiful, and so sad. It makes me feel so lucky for what I have. Good job.

Brilliant!

Caring for a cause, holding the verses together, behold my warmest apreciations, may your pen yield many more such words.

Thanks for putting down these feelings!

Sudhir Iyer.

Try hard to succeed and fly,

But if by some chance you don’t,

That today’s efforts will pay for tomorrow’s fun.

Hi Poet deVine,

This is just wonderful my friend and you are so right this issue has been push to the back burner and these people are now unfortunetly part of every day life all around us so we are so used to seeing them we forget what they are going through, it is a sad thing to happen to a country that prides its self on stability.

Thank you for sharing this,

Cerenity
