Author's Note:  This one needs a bit of explaining, too.  When I wrote this, my self-esteem was very low, and I was frustrated with my life.  I was also out of cigarettes, and I was thinking that I would almost sell my body for a pack of cigarettes, if anyone would buy.

I also felt that I had compromised myself by giving up on my dreams and settling for whatever came my
way.  I felt that I had "prostituted" myself, by seeking "any shelter in a storm," and I was especially disappointed in myself because I had settled for having sex with a good female friend, when what I really wanted was love.

On top of all of this, I was going through a sort of "mid-life crisis," and I felt that there was no hope left for me.  It was a pretty dark period in my life, so the song is equally dark...

     Whore to Society

Whore to society -
Sell your body for a pack of smokes.
Remember when you used to think
That life was just a joke?
Now, it ain't so funny;
You know, it seems the laugh's on you.
Though you fill your head with golden dreams, you know
They never will come true.

You run from your shadow;
It's been chasing you, for so long.
Well, once upon a time, you stood up to life;
But, now, you're not that strong.
You know you're getting nowhere,
And it cuts you, like a knife.
And, now, your days and nights are filled with fear,
You'll be running all your life.

Now, the years have passed you by,
Like dry leaves upon the wind.
It's much too late, to pick up the pieces,
And try to live again.
Cuz, while you searched for hope and love,
Father Time crept up on you.
And, as you watch the sun set on your life, you know
Your whoring days are through.

Whore to society -
Sell your body for a pack of smokes...

I can relate to a time and place where I may have sang this same song....well written Troy and I'm glad this time passed.  Thank you for sharing this.

 Hold me for yesterday
Kiss me for tomorrow
But love me for today.

Butterflies - thanks for your kind words!  I think anyone over 20 has probably felt like this at one time or another.  I'm glad you could relate.

Troy, this seems like a very strong, fluid song, and that you allowed some insight into its inception is nice. Thank you.

Great job, Troy.  We have all been there at one time in our life.  Sorry you felt this way, but glad that it is in the past.  I am betting it is an excellent song!!!

Claire - thank you for your kind words!  It's written sort-of in the style of Elton John.  I could hear him singing it in my head as I wrote it.

Denise - you've got it, my friend!  As soon as I can get a microphone for my computer, I'll e-mail you a copy.

Martie - thank you!  I'm glad you like it.

Lone Wolf - thanks, my friend!  I will also send you a copy, when I get an audio file made.  Not sure if it qualifies as an "excellent song" - but it sure was heartfelt!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments - you guys are the best!
