Thank you Corinne For Posting Timber, it reminded me of this poem, since Earth Day is coming I challenge all poets to write something meaningful for our precious home, and dedicate it to earth day. Visit...  http://www.earthday.net/  for some ideas.

Parker

Our Mother Earth

45 years since we left our home
and traveled the dark and empty night
A million ships, a billion strong
searching for a home to end our flight.

Worlds and Worlds have come and gone
not one was ever right
Oceans of tar and toxic gas
the horror of their sight.

Where is the blues and emerald greens
white puffs to roam the sky
The morning songs of chickadees
before the sun is high.

With ozone gone and acid rain
the cancer from the sky
We cut the trees that helped us breath
Murder is our crime.

Without remorse, Our thoughtless Course
meant death would come in time
Now gone for good, The World of Birth
the sweet, the innocent,
"Our Mother Earth"

James Parker Haley (c)1992

(can we ever do enough to stop the self-
distruction we've brought to our world.
Write to your Government and tell them
to stop killing our old trees)

Thanks, Parker!  Loved this poem.

I don't have too many "causes," but this one has always been close to my heart.

This issue doesn't get enough attention - trees can't talk so we've got to do the talking and writing.

Thanks for posting this.

Thanks deVine and Corinne. I too believe, we could do so much more help save these tree's. The little profit that these companies get does not compensate anybody for what we lose in our primeval forest stands. The rain forest is the worst example, and they just keep cutting it. They just don't understand that it filters the largest percentage of air on this earth. It is the climate control center of the world. We don't even know want the affect would be if its all distroyed, but it looks like we are going to find out.

Thanks for your replies.

Parker-- this is a fantastic poem!!
powerful and written with words of wisdom.
Mankind will always be his own worst enemy and greed will always be our downfall.

This is great, you speaking up like this and reminding us all...
and dont ya know...
we just love a man with a cause
take care, jm

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

James, that's what friends are for.  When something is important to a friend it is important to me.  Particulary a cause, such as this. It is everyone responsability to their part.

I am cheating here. This is a poem I wrote
when I was 16 - it was published in
Western Washington State Univerity's
newspaper.  But as I look at it now it is pretty raw.

But, it certainly reflects earth day!

Tomorrow

No flower blossoms to color the day
to end the world this way
man's mind must have been a dismal gray

June comes after the month of May
still animals die in the oily bay.
Where are the oats, corn, wheat and hay?

Tall buildings stand crowded in the heat of the day
The sun shines down on the hard earth clay
And, still the wind sweeps the litter away.

Plants and trees  no longer come out to play
Will it ever be known was it too late to pray?

Mankind needs to consider tomorrow - today
For without tomorrow there will be no yesterdays.

Okay here is one I just wrote.

The Little Things that We can Do

Mother earth come to me
sometimes I fail thee

I separate my cans, paper and bottles, too
I try not to buy plastic from people who do

Sometimes, I am tired, and wonder what
does it matter. I am only one person

I drive as little as necessary
and never buy colored toilet paper
and never buy napkins or paper towels
Though my family really lets out howls

Baby diapers, I had a plenty
washed and dryed outside and not
for the lack of money

My heat is off - most the year through
my dryer and my dishwasher, too

My hands are getting worn and I see
other women my age that are still beauties

At weddings I never throw rice, for I know
it kills many birds - exploding in their tummies
and that is not nice.

When I feed the birds in the glorious summer
I always must remember to feed them the whole
year through adding butter so they won't freeze
just little things that I must remember to do

I ask God to grant me the strength to live
this life style, even if it is for a little while

When I kill a plant I remember to plant again to replenish for whatever I need
Yes, I know I should wipe with leaves,
but if I did that I would have to face the family

Squander as little as I can - I am not perfect and it is hard to do - I try to help with what I do.

I am not perfect and find that I fail thee
many times, mother earth.  And, for that I
am very sorry. Earth to Earth and ashes to ashes
I cry -- -I try my hardest, but sometimes, wonder why - am I the only one?

Teresa, they are both wonderful post for the Earth Day Cause, a challenge well met. If we all could just put as much effort in our daily lives I think we might have a chance.
You should maybe cut and post them on their own with a dedication to earthday. Maybe the more that are seen the more poets will join in for this cause.

Hi Parker, since I am new here, more likely
it would be read in your post.
I forgot, also to compliment you on your
own very well written poem. -- It is very
good --- --)

I thought your posting was like the romantic
posting where everyone was adding their stuff on the one posting.  My mistake,
sorry.

Warmly,
Teresa

my piece.
