Pain of Yesterday
-Amy M. Kennedy-

A little girl chokes back the tears
She tries to close her eyes and erase her fears
But he is standing there clutching his fist
And she knows it won't be too long till she's next on his list

For a while things are okay, he is off drinking
Her mother is sitting at the table quietly thinking
But her own mother is in her own haze
And the little girl is left confused and in a daze

Her own father is like the darkness of night
When he is around, there is no light
He cripples them with his words
The cuts are deeper than could be with any sword

She wishes she was a bird and could fly far away
Find some place where rainbows and sunny skies always stay
But she is just a child, with no voice at all
As he picks a fight again, and throws her mother against the wall

She is now an adult but the memories still are there
She was lucky enough to get out, and to have parents that care
But she never has forgotten those sleepless nights
Where the only comfort is hiding in the darkness of the night

She vowed when she was grown up, she would have a voice to be heard
She would make the people stop and her words be heard
She went to college, and fights for children every day
Never forgetting the pain she endured, the pain of yesterday.

This poem is of a true story of myself. I once a long time ago (though the memories are still there) suffered from the hands of abuse/neglect. Fortunately I along w/ my two sisters were adopted and saved and allowed out of the world of hell. I only wish more children were as fortunate as we are!!! I have majored in social work and am pursing a career in Child Protective Services. I know I can not save ALL the children, (wish i could) but I can surely do my part and will!!

God Bless you all and Take care of one another!

AMY

Amy,
God bless you for what you are doing. I only wish there were more people so compassionate about this problem.

All my love,
Jeffrey

once a lost little girl...
she's not lost anymore.
she's grown into this kind woman...
I so adore.
She started out the hard way,
the story is sad and all too true...
But angels kissed her on the cheek,
and set her free from a life of blue.
In time she grew stonger...
and she healed in the light of a mothers love.
She found the healing power of faith...
and she sees the light that shines from above.
She stands here now...
holding out her two loving hands...
reaching out to help the new lost,
and my respect she commands.

love you amy-girl
jan

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

This is a great poem Amy, and so sad that you had to live through this.

I loved the title so much I went and wrote a poem with the same title

"And she knows it won't be long til she's next on his list."
"Her own father is like the darkness of night."
"When he is around there is no light."
"we were allowed out of this world of hell"
These words are so strong...the entire poem is written with so much honesty and conviction.
My heart goes out to you and your sisters..it is wonderful that you are pursuing a career in Child Protective Services..I hope and pray you will soon be in a position where you can prevent the neglect and abuse.    James

Amy,  I am so glad you got out!
And so sorry you had to live like
that at all.

This is a beautiful poem and well written.
And, your life's pursuit is great -

Children need help -
