One Incident of Abuse
By: Amy M. Kennedy

Drunk, you came home once more
My heart and soul you have tore
Your hateful words broke down my self esteem
The look in your eye, that sickening gleam

I watched you that day, you thought I wasn't there
You were too wasted and stoned to even care
You hit her, my Mom, told her scream and you die
All I could do is just watch and cry

Then you noticed I was there, and turned your rage on me
What could I do, I was only three
I screamed for you to leave her alone
You laughed at me, your face cold as stone

With one swift blow, you took all my hope away
My love for you went out like a candle, that cold winter day
She tried to help me, but you broke a bone or two
I got off the floor and screamed "I hate you"

You called me all kinds of names, things I can't repeat
Amazing how low one person can truly sink
But this adds up nothing to the other abuse I endured
I now know you must have been truly sick, irrational, and disturbed

Now I am all grown up and live a different life
No longer living with the pain that cut like a knife
I am now persuing a career that goes against people like you
To be a social worker, that's what I want to do!

Oh, Amy, my heart does cry - this past
two days has been a tissue day on my
desk top for these messages.

My stepfather was holding up bathroom up
and my little sister of three, had to pee.
She knocked and knocked on the bathroom door  - he was in there
doing God knows what. And, she just couldn't
hold it anymore.

He came out in a rage, threw her against the
wall and  at the tender age of six I dived into him with all my tiny fists and gnashing
teeth, and I was too little to do any
damage and off I was cast against the other
wall,  but my 11 year old sister broke his
front tooth, and my eight year old sister found his weak spot with her foot - and we watched him writhe in pain as the ambulance took my little sister to the hospital.

Thanks so much for sharing,
netswan

Amy~
Heartfelt and sad, I loved the strength of character at the end.
Hope your dream comes true, I'm sure you will be great at whatever you decide to do in life.
Tracie~

I knew this topic would be hard for you ...
I also knew you would rise to the challenge with your usual grace and class...
you did not disapoint me...you never do*S*

what dont kill us makes us stronger?
maybe...
but it does define who we are, and the choices we make later...all i know is you doing it right...and making all who love you proud...me included.
perfect poem amy-girl...
love ya,jm

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

I thank God for the people who step up to battle abuse.  Indeed, what rewards they are due.  Most of them had to go through hell to get to that point...  Kinda goes back to that "everything happens for a reason" clause.  Good poem, Amy.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments. It means a lot to me. This like Jan said is a very hard topic for me to discuss. However, I wouldn't have felt right not replying to this post/challenge. God bless you all and take care!

Amy a very sad picture you have painted here.  You wrote is perfectly with emotion and spirit.  It is unfortunite that it does only take one time, sad but true.  Thank you for going into your heart and posting this.
