Imaginary Friend

closet dark
the cold sets in
hours thinking
and flinching
from spider webs

Creaking stairs
loud yelling
shivering

whispering to
no one until
one day - your
imaginary friend
walks in

the closet fills
with shining light
and a tea party
you do prepare

Giggling and talking
about silly girlish
things -and your
face glows with
the love she brings

the closet becomes
a secret place
where you and she
do meet

-- shhh
its a secret, you
remind yourself as
you scream loud
and clear - "Don't
lock me in!"

"Keep him fooled,"
she giggles in your
ear - for in here
it's just you and me,
my friend.

Then somehow, childhood
passes you by and you
are finally set free
to do as you please

And, now
you have to let
your imaginary
friend go -
Oh, you love her
so.

But, in life
good things must
end and she needs
to find another
abused child friend

You gently hug
her and whisper
"I love you.
Please remember me."

She waits a moment
standing still, and
says, "I love you,
too. Don't worry,
I will."

Then, vanishes in
the air.

NetSwan~
A trauma so tenderly done.
How sad that it is a refuge for some.
Very delicate.

So open, so true, so sad, so touching.

the human heart and mind have many defense mechanisms to help our souls cope...
swan this is very moving and I related to it well...I still hear the voices...
only now I let them inspire my poetry.
take care,jm

Well the sun sets gently on your shoulders
And it makes me want to touch you there.
And the light in your eyes makes me feel
Like there's something much better out there
Something kind...
And I know someday I might be looking around
Trying to find some purpose
Well purpose it can't be that hard to find
As long as I've got the wind...
The wind and your love to carry me.

I can only read one of these abuse poems and then I have to go back to work and not "feel" for a while....as they touch so deeply....really beautifully done ....sigh

So sad, but so well done. Good job.

This poem sheds a lot of light on something for me.  My exhusband has always had a habit of sitting in closets after we'd have an argument.  He said he didn't know why he did that.  I know that when he was a child, his mother used to lock him in the attic, in the dark, for hours on end.  Perhaps he had his own imaginary friend to help him through the troubling times and still found solace in being alone in the dark as an adult?

I thank each and everyone of you
for reading this and your compliments
- it makes it so much easier to write
about these things -- but for the cause
I will tell it all - again and again,
until this grown child and others,
too, get heard

hugs to you all, netswan

This is a beautiful poem about a tragic reality.

Love and hugs,
Lizzie
