They called him "Doc"
Respected
Farmer, friend and neighbor
One on whom
All in his community
Could depend

His family and neighbors
Gathered at his house
On Sunday afternoons
Other times left their children with him
While they ran errands

Everyone thought he was
Oh, so nice
For he loved little children
They never thought twice
Or could they surmise
Why their children would sulk
When a visit to "Uncle Doc's"
Was mentioned

In pain, with shame
They suffered
Day by day building
Walls around their pain

One turned to drink
One developed a controling personality
One threw herself into a career and work
Nursing the physical pains of others
One had multiple marriages
Disturbed by the load of shame
She carried

One of these committed suicide
And one of these took his shame
And passed it on...

Challenge well met.
Very strong piece.
Pass the word to prevent child abuse.
Help those who cannot help themselves.

These are very powerful words.  it is a known fact that most children are abused by someone they not only known, but are trusted family members or a powerful person in their community.  The person whom we least exspect.
Thank you very much for sharing this piece with us. A challenge very well met!  Stay strong my friend.

Wow..this is an excellent piece. Succinct and powerful in its retelling. The last 2 lines tho just bring it all home...."took his shame and passed it on.."

that you've never had it before."

I will let you in on a secret this man Doc, lived in the early 1900's, this is a true story, He passed the shame on to my father who in turn passed it on to me.  I took my pain, sought help and this cycle of abuse stopped before God forbid, I would pass it on to my children. Most abusers have been abused, they in their pain most times are unable to seek help. They are to be pityed, for they will never know the joy of really feeling the true love of a child. If you have been abused seek help, if you are an abuser stop seek help, you will find that there are those who find compassion for you.
