The Rainbow Rose

Walking through the garden centre
admiring the beautiful flowers
so engrossed by the wonderful smells
I got soaked by the April showers

Round I went to my favourite place
Where I couldn't believe my eyes
there was the most exquisite rose
standing about five inches high

The petals were each so different
colours of the rainbow in every single hue
mesmerised I stood and gasped
at this tiny wonder hidden from view

There are some exotic flowers here
that display a warning sign
explaining that you must not touch
or you could destroy its life line

Not a single sign least not one I could see
so carefully between my fingers I held this velvet rose
I'd never seen one before with so many different colours
when right beside me I heard someone blow their nose

What's the name that this rose is known and sold by?
with merry laugh and deep twinkle in his eyes
he said it's called the Rainbow Rose
as I laughed he turned and look surprised

Your laughter reminds me of an evening's summer breeze
almost without knowing he touched a petal starting to curl
"what's your name smiling lady" he very kindly asked?
and with my wicked humour I replied "It's RainbowGirl"

As I asked him lots of questions about this rose's origin
he suggested we sit in the cafe and he'd tell me over tea
this rose lived with its mate and was truly one of a kind
for once they tried to part them nearly ending in misery

It seems that Rainbow's partner transmits a strange energy
the night they were parted Rainbow wilted and was ever so dry
when they were checked in the morning the gardener said
and it's no word of a lie "the mate had started to die"

The experts gathered round and samples were taken by the dozen
no amount of testing revealed a single clue other than the fact
that without each other they would both wilt, curl up and die
so now they were back together their colours still causing an impact

By now this man had guessed that I wanted to take home this rose
shaking his head he smilingly said the man who owned the place
when asked previously had always politely but firmly said no
but then he said, he's never been asked by a Rainbow face to face

I dreaded to think of the cost of two such extradordinary roses
just as I started to ask someone stopped by the side of my chair
the gardener introduced me to the man who was the owner
RainbowGirl wants Rainbow Rose he solemnly declared

The owner said he would sell but only if I took part in a test
I had to keep a petal without it curling up inside my hand for exactly one hour
but petals curl up without moisture and the gardener looked up and smiled
that's the deal, pass the test and you'll go home with a very beautiful flower

The owner went to get a petal and a crowd started to gather round
the gardener told me not to worry if I passed I'd get the roses for free
standing there with petal in my hand beads of persperation on my face
I couldn't understand why this gardener was smiling with such glee

Throughout the last 45 minutes my eyes squeezed tight and firmly closed
as voices counted down 60 seconds I thought it was too good to be true
opening my eyes the petal was still opened up in the palm of my hand
tiny beads of sweat had dripped from my face keeping the petal like new...

Just don't ask...it kept my mind off something for a couple of hours..

Hi RainbowGirl,

Oh you made my day with this one, I have over a 160 rose bushes but if there were such one as you so beautifully described I would be in heaven.
Thank you so much for this lovely poem my dear,

Well, I certainly enjoyed it but obviously not as much as Corazon!!! Boy, Rainbow, if your touch could stop wilting, I'd love to be in your hands!
