So many now have heard the tale,
Every year and without fail,
Of the journey over hill and dale,
Of the one called Peter Cottontail.

But I am here to testify
That last Easter I did spy
This rabbit hopping caught my eye
And I decided to end his life.

He was grinning from ear to ear
And I grinned too, as he grew near
I cocked my gun up by my ear
And felt the trigger with a snear.

Peter didn't know as he hopped along
How close I was to ending his song
"Here comes Peter Cottontail"---Wrong!
There he goes and the chase is on.

I chased that damned rabbit Cottontail
Over hill and over dale
Through the creek, through rain and hail
I stomped after Peter Cottontail.

We stopped at a clearing just he and I
And in his eyes I did spy
Fear and loathing from this small fry
Because he knew he was gonna die.

He tossed his eggs at me in futility,
Begged for mercy in humility,
Held out photos for me to see
Of his bunny wife and family.

I paused for a moment in the fading light
As the day faded into night
I dropped my gun, lowered my sights
Something just did not feel right.

Then as he turned to run away,
I'll never forget what his tail did say
Just above his cottontail's sway
Was a Hershey's Chocolate sign that day.

I raised my gun with practiced ease
Shot him hard enough to knock of fleas.
I would hear no more mournful pleas
As the rabbit fell down to his knees.

So there went Peter Cottontail.
He'll hop down no more bunny trails.
And Easter is no longer for sale,
Cause there's no more Peter Cottontail.

---I'm sure I'll get sued by Hershey and Cadbury's over this one, but I think there's a much better reason for Easter that so many overlook for rampant commercialism.

Knowlege tempered by wisdom...Wisdom tamed by youth.

Dear Mr. Evans,
I'm completely shocked over this terribly inappropriate poem! Yanno, shooting that varmit in the ass is not only cowardly but dastardly! You should be ashamed! (By the way, how did ya cook it? I have a great recipe for a rabbit marinade). I used to shoot skeet, but got bored, plus, I've tried to cook those damn things every way imaginable; Boiled, fried, on the grill, in casseroles, and it just plain doesn't matter....they still taste kinda chalky? (Have ya ever shot dove?....You know, those bird crapping, meatless things flying around innocently with an olive branch or some other stupid thing in their mouths?)

Danny:  I'm sure that they are now a terrible burden on society...probably on bunny financial assistance.

Toe:  lol...eggs were already boiled so I made frickasie for breakfast.  Shooting dove to me is like pidgeon...I tend to think that only Europeans can enjoy that type of delicacy.

What a somber (albeit hilarious) tail~uh~TALE you've got here. I caught myself giggling more than once, reading your verses. (throwing his eggs, showing his family photos??!!)

Poor widdle runny babbit. (Wonderful message though)

Told hubby this morning I needed to get cards for the grandkids "for Easter" and he commented I was just "buying in to the commercialism" - well, I wasn't chasing rabbit, and I wasn't going "all out", but he had a point, as do you, Sven, so...

nicely put!
