My Sickbed

I couldn't tell what he was saying
Standing there by my sick bed.
He was holding up a dollar;
As I tried to clear my head.

"We sheared all of the sheep today.
This dollar is for you.
Your lamb had such a nice, thick coat
Of wool, the finest too."

I was nine years and never
Had a dollar for myself.
I watched him wink and tuck it
Very high upon the shelf.

I wondered what would happen
If it was I were to die.
Would my sister get my dollar?
I was much too sick to cry.

My mamma came with Jello and
A cool cloth for my head,
Saying softly, "You'll be well soon,
As I waited to be fed.

I don't remember how I spent it
That silver dollar of my own.
Perhaps I shared it with the others.
Bought us each an ice cream cone.

But I remember Daddy as
He tried to make me smile,
And my mamma as she whispered,
"You'll be better after while."

Joyce~
You brought back a memory of when I was just seven years old ... so vividly I recalled the fever of my body ... the tendering of my mother ... the little *gift* that was tucked under my pillow ... what a flood of memories that touched me so very tenderly~

Thank you ... for the stir~

I had pneumonia and such a high fever I was delirious part of the time.  I know now my folks were very worried about me.  I recall trying to focus on that dollar.  Love, Joyce

Joyce,

I enjoyed your memory here and I think that it's quite interesting the things that we remember from childhood. Though it caused you to be worried as a child, I'm glad that you eventually got the dollar and, given the value of a dollar back then, what an amazing motivation in retrospect you were given to get well.

Enjoyed reading and I thank you for sharing your memories.

-Bob
