Departing Guests

Suzy awakened early
and pattered down the hall
to see if possibly they still
might be there after all.

She passed my door without a glance,
knowing I'd still be in bed,
hoping that the early risers
would welcome her instead.

I arose to call her softly,
"Suzy dear, they are not here.
They've gone back to California
where the weather's not so drear."

This morning's coffee is untouched
by anyone but me.
I pour myself a lonely cup;
my dog for company.
