Melinite; A Faerie Saga

Flying on elegant wings of gold, was the fairy’s flight
Late message for the leader, the lovely Melinite
The Faerie king was dying; she was his daughter proud
Now dashing back to see him, through the roiling cloud

Faerie Glades were near in view, soon be at his side
Find a wayward moonbeam; on its back now ride
Imperial Leaders to the fore, welcoming her in
Though Faeries are a happy race, all were very grim

Her father lay there dying; yet rose to take her hand
Through them passed all knowledge, of the Faerie band
In a way we can’t explain, she came to understand
The troubles that would face her, as new leader in this land

Faerie lands were drying up, rain it fell no more
Trees, the Faeries lifeblood; were dying by the score
Still, the stagnant pools, that once were babbling streams
No life was in the forest; all was as a dream

Wizard in a far off tower, had some Faerie dust
It would not be easy; but get it back she must
The Wizard knew its value, she would have to pay
No matter what the price, must have it come what may

King was getting weaker, now was lying down
In his final moments, took off the Faerie Crown
Melinite bowed close, transfer quickly made
Instead of massive crown, tiara was in place

A tiara has rare beauty, as it glitters in the air
This one was magnificent, far beyond compare
Gold and Silver accents, jewels that shone with light
But still a worthless bauble, when worn by Melinite

How can I, mere mortal, begin to describe
The timeless qualities, of such as Melinite
Slim, seemly weightless, better would be lithe
So graceful that her movement, is as though she glides

Her very shadow dances, as if to show it’s pleased
To mimic every motion, of her moving round with ease
Describe the colour of her skin; simple enough you say
But how can I describe, what changes every day

Gaze into an opal; at the opals many shades
Merely poor reflections, of how Melinite is made
Normal colours pearl like, tiny hint of green
Emotions change her shading, to hues as yet unseen

Face of Helen, Queen of Troy, launched a thousand ships
You have heard her beauty, extolled from my poor lips
But how can I describe a moonbeam in a glade
Or a Dragonfly reflecting, in and out of shade

Ethereal and Magical, are really only words
But they are the closest, to what I have observed
Even in the sadness, upon her on that day
Beauty like the Dawning Sun, sending out its rays

Now she stood before the band, bowing to her task
Knowing that her next great flight, well could be her last
She bowed now to her people, shapely head was bent
A little nervous giggle at the task that she’d been sent

Slight hunch of her shoulder blades, as her wings unfurled
Then rising high into the sky, she left the Faerie world
Not one word was spoken, not a single cheer
As the Ruler of the Flawless Flight, flew away from there

But later, when the Faeries spoke, about that fateful day
Knew that in their Faerie Glens, most of them had prayed
For Faeries shun the human world, dangers are too vast
But Wizards yearn for Faerie powers; know it from the past

Now their youthful Princess, had gone to human lands
All the fate of Faeriedom, rested in her hands

So she flew between our worlds, between and yet among
Many worlds, in conjoined states, are there since time begun
She could track the Wizards tower, by magic he had used
There she’d find the answers, be it help, or just abuse

Dangers faced, and perils fought, alas we do not know
But in a day that felt a year, she was where she should go
Battered as by Hurricane, on tattered wings she flew
In her sight, early twilight, Wizards tower now grew

Twilight is a very, very special time of day
It’s then the Spirits of the night, first come out to play
The gateways to the many worlds, sundered, set aside
As the day turns into night, many of them ride

Wizard, being wise enough, was busy with his spells
Using hard his Chrystal Ball, with all that this foretells
Faerie magic’s special, so she came unseen
Appeared there right before him, as though from a dream

When you think of Wizards, are they tall and thin
Saturnine, with longish beard, no sign of a grin
What Melinite expected, truly we can’t say
We know that that is different, to who she faced that day

A tiny wrinkled man, stood before now
On his wizened countenance, no trace of a scowl
Jewellers’ loupe in one eye, myopically he looked
Knew her in an instant, that was all it took

“Ruler of the Flawless Flight, really glad you’ve come
Melinite, can only say, pleased you are the one
You will have heard about me, many foolish things
Come; sit down; food; rest your weary wings”

Wizards who are wise, may change their shape at will
To be another person, does not need much skill
Was he truly as he looked, a tiny aged man
Was it all a trick; some part of a plan

Melinite is young, so can she comprehend
Subtleties between, enemy and friend
Is there any difference, if both want the same
She as Faerie Princess, must now play the game

“You think I want your Faerie glades; be that as it may
You’ve come to me at Twilight, the Magic time of day
Perhaps its really you I want, to encapture here
Or do you think the Twilight, will let you disappear”

“The vial of Faerie dust, is sitting on the sill
You may have it gladly, if my wishes you fulfil
From DragonN, I need a tooth, to complete a spell
So first just do this deed, make sure you do it well”

Melinite was awestruck, could not say a word
Faerie steal a Dragon tooth?this was quite absurd
For Faeries although magical, are very dainty things
Not like mighty Dragons, with their flames and wings

So she rested for a time, fed to gain her strength
To regain the Faerie dust, she’d go to any length
Now the night had settled in, last quarter of the moon
Not many stars were shining, to clear the fearsome gloom

DragonN as Dragons do, did not mind a fight
She had gone out hunting, earlier that night
Crunchy bits from flambéed Knights, led a gory trail
From the battlefield below, back up to her cave

Now she sat in regal splendour, on her rocky throne
Surveying dull humanity, from her mountain home
Shimmers, iridescent, were coming from her scales
She was feeling quite replete, with all that this entails

A sudden golden glimmer, through the entrance there
And before her startled gaze, Melinite appeared
“A Faerie here!! How Dare You!! This is my time of rest
Perhaps you want to be flambéed! Relax I only jest”

“What is it you want from me, Why come to my cave?
It’s only fit for Dragonkind, or silly knights too brave”
Melinite in quietened tones, explained the Faeries plight
Trying to avoid, the reason for her flight

Wizards must be wise, or so the legends say
Dragons are much wiser, much wiser any day
DragonN just listened, one claw beneath her chin
As Melinite finished her tale, she gave a wicked grin

“ Wizard wants something, you can only get from me
Tell me what it is, we’ll see what we can see”
In halting tones Melinite, explained about the tooth
Tremble in her golden wings, showed she told the truth

Sitting on her throne, DragonN looked down
At Faerie Princess Melinite, sitting on the ground
A little blast of brimstone, hovered in the air
But Melinite was steadfast, not showing any fear

A Dragons tooth has many powers, some unknown to man
Most Wizards drool to own one, anytime they can
Wizards do not realise, how quickly they’re replaced
For a Dragon to lose just one tooth, doesn’t cost much face

A gift is never prized, as much as something that is won
DragonN reflected, ‘til the rising of the sun
A gentle sweep of tail, brought the Faerie high
In a moment she was gazing, into the Dragons eye

Very few have done this; and lived to tell the tale
Dragons’ eyes are eloquent, in all that they portray
She saw Love and Pain, the rise and fall of kings
A rebirth on an island far, and many other things

Now she knew her task, to gain the Dragons fang
She would have to travel, into the world of man
World of misconceptions, envy hate and lust
Didn’t want to do it; but do it she must

Melinite took flight, towards the dawning sun
Now her testing time, truly had begun
Cross ocean cold and Northward, steadily she flew
Knew she had her duty, and what she must do

Travel in the Earthly Plane, is not an easy task
Time she reached the other side, face a graven mask
She was sorely tired, ached in every bone
‘Til on the distant shore, she finally found the home

Rested for a while, to try regain her strength
Next task was at hand; it would go full length
Uneasy was her mind, as she hovered in the air
Then into the silence, a voice came chrystal clear

Redolent with human tones, hard to understand
Through their caustic guise, knew they came from man
Yet there was a wistfulness, nothing could disguise
Plain he saw the Faerie, through a lovers eyes

Deep into her Faerie heart, he saw with just one glance
Melinite, relieved, knew she had a chance
She filled her mind with memories, of the DragonN
Felt the Joy that welled inside, this puny human man
On his chest, above his heart, he wore a silken pouch
Raised it for a moment, kissed it with his mouth
She’d carried far a Dragons Love, knew it was returned
And for such a love; her Faerie heart now burned

Returning flight was easier, to the Dragons cave
Man had shown his honour; must be very brave
Melinite was envious; she had felt the love
Directed from the man, to DragonN above

But her task was over, DragonN now smiled
Invited Melinite, to rest here for a while
So Mighty Dragon fierce, Faerie tired and cold
Rested there with Dragon wings, around them to enfold

A Dragon fang, was lying, before Melinite
When she opened up her eyes, first thing in her sight
Seems they often lose them, Knights armour can be tough
But now it was a present, to Melinite with Love

“Beware of the Wizard, for Dragons teeth have power
He will try to capture you; of this you can be sure”
“Your steadfastness is proven; so believe in mine
Wizard beat a Dragon?…. Never in my time”

These were the final words, to come from DragonN
Melinite, with rested wings, took to the air again
Riding on a Moonbeam; carried far away
Reached the Wizards tower, at the break of day

Wizard was, as Wizards are, proud and quite conceited
Never for a moment, considered he’d be bested
So he looked upon the tooth, clenched in fingers tight
Decided it was time, to now trap Melinite

Faerie Dust is magical, or so the legends say
He did not feel the need, to give the dust away
Now he had the tooth, thus the Dragons power
Smile upon his face, turned into a glower

“Drink this wine and rest, now it is the day
Not a time for Faeries, to go out and play”
But she would not drink, could smell the taint inside
Capturing a Faerie, was all he had in mind

Bands of iron, magical, dropped over her now
Trapping her in tightly, draining Faerie power
For iron is used by men, not in Faerie glades
She could not escape, or any move be made

Reaching in desperation, deep inside herself
She sent a mental scream, to anyone for help
Wizard looked contemptuous, as only Wizards can
Faerie Dust, Dragons Tooth, all power was in his hands

Wizards plan was working, end was now in sight
He would master everything, before the fall of night
Dragon tooth the centre, of an evil spell
He began to conjure, with Faerie dust as well

Tooth from DragonN, been blessed by her mate
It was full of Love, could never conjure hate
As it showed its power, it turned all iron like rust
Melinite was banded; by rings of Faerie dust

Glowing like a firefly, with Wizard tossed aside
Collected all enchantments, then began her ride
First the cave of DragonN, to return her fang
Then back to the Faerie glades, where it all began

Now the Faerie lands, are the greenest green
Melinite is reigning, as the Faerie Queen
DragonN is welcome, often takes this flight
With her mate she’s coming now in the dim twilight

Live It

I was asked to write something along the lines of Prophecy or Legend of the Chystal Flame but more suited for younger kids
This was the result
I was reasonably pleased but a bit worried how it would go with  older more experienced
readers
Thankyou
Peter
