Progress

"Crazy old lady, sitting on the road".
He didn't say that's how
the complaint went.
He was too polite.

"I can see you're not", he
replied to my furious protest,
"But we have to respond to
these calls".

I deliberately turned
my back and kept digging
grass roots from
my own garden.

I felt an empathy for them,
sinking ever deeper
into the soft soil, struggling
for survival.

I am planting bulbs to
brighten the country side.
only the bicycler or occasional jogger
will notice.

Or perhaps the farmer
with his heavy machinery,
stubbornly blocking the
roadway.

Thirty-six years ago this fall
he carefully measured,leaving three feet
as a buffer between my garden
and the road.

Last week they paved it again,
taking the last few inches.
My roses languish with their roots
under pavement.

Joyce~
Aw, tweets, that's so sad~
I can just see you planting ... spreading a little color of joy for others to see~

Must confess ... I often sprinkle an assortment of wild flower seeds along some of the roadway median strips ...~

Hey ... your penning gives new meaning to 'stop and smell the roses'~
Guess it needs to be done QUICKLY, huh ?

The trouble is this really happ[ened this week.  The sheriff office got a report that I was a hazzard on the road.  I have worked that garden for thirty-six years.  He was laughing about it so I just imagined how the message read.   I live on the corner of a country road and it is a thirty-five mile zone.  And a stop sign, but they zip by at 80.  Thanks.  Joyce

Dear Joyce:  This is really a sad state of affairs!  There is no place for beauty anymore in many corners of the world. I'm sorry this has happened to you!

Progress, they say is inevitable, but it doesn't make it right.
You should of told the Sheriff you will call him everytime your going to plant by the road, so he can protect you from the speeders.
