Perfect Day

A feast of sumptious food lay ready
rainbow of salad and mixed pepper rice
Cherries in kirsh, summer fruit kebabs.
Scent of raspberry and strawberry ice.

tables of goodies to tempt the taste-buds
Creamy dressings and barbeque sauce
Honey glazed ham and peppered steaks
Sweet fleshy tomatoes on iceberg and cos

A golden scotch and an auburn brandy
Sparkling white wine , full bodied red .
Waiting on ice and a bucket of water
Next to the dozen crates by the shed.

Five picnic tables and twenty chairs
Were dotted around the daisied lawn
The garden swing creaked in the breeze
Birds chirped in the thicket of blackthorn.

Two grey squirrels streaked up a tree
showering ripe apples like heavy rain
The fat family cat perked up a little
Arched her back, plopped down again.

Charcoal and smoke filled the air
The animals vanished from sight
The garden a palace for partying,
an avenue of lanterns jewel bright

Then all at once the mood was gone
A white bolt of fire scratched the sky
a mighty down-pour spilled from above
Thunder-claps drowned out my cry

My garden party became a lake,
The barbeque hissed and died
I watched the apples begin to float
A barbeque in Britain? Suicide !

Ah life's like that sometimes.  Rain clouds in Britain and in Washington State wait for no barbecue.  Love, Joyce

junemac:  It was making my mouth water reading your menu and the setting!  Not the first time a downpour has spoiled a festive event!
