My Wish for the Graduate

God has given me a long life
And filled it full of cheer;
Not least of which is a grandson
Whom I hold wholly dear.

He now has passed a big milestone
In a life just getting started.
I wish for him countless good gifts;
The first that he be great-hearted.

A great-hearted man will persevere
With calm determination.
With clear resolve he'll find his way
Through the toughest situation.

The next gift that I wish for him,
A sympathetic spirit;
Wisdom for him to find the good
In those of lesser merit.

May his great heart be filled with love
For creatures great and small,
For his parents and his siblings
And his God the most of all.

Though at times the day may darken
And it's hard to see the way,
His sympathetic, loving heart
Will lead to a brighter day.
