Apathy

I watch the cold cold morning break
across my window sill
Where frost and fog, now, rain awakes
the scent of winter’s chill
Comforter and close quarters
preserve me warm and snug
Why shouldn’t I be satisfied
so wrapped up like a bug?
Should Tidal Wave or Sudden Grave
engulf me in despair?
For how could I but hope to save
just one strand of their hair?
It’s not I lack compassion for
the many souls who’ve died
I think, perhaps, it's simply more
today -- I’ll stay inside.

Lighthouse Bob

Bob:  The magnitude of this disaster is quite overwhelming. We are too far away to do anything and wonder if we could if we were there.  I do understand your feelings.
Good poem!

Joyce,

You have such a big big heart, that a big job I'm sure would not detour you much, but rather would motivate you, as it always has as observed here in your most compassionate and caring poetry, to write and to encourage, inspire, and to motivate others. Guilty? NO. Compassionate? YES. Love ya too. -Bob

Dixie,

I am so glad that you can relate. There are days like this that are soooo cold and miserable
outside that it really doesn’t make a whole lot  of sense to go outside of these walls at all
and when something happens at the magnitude of this recent disaster, it just makes me
want to stay inside even more as to reflect on life and gather my thoughts, etc. and also to
gather my strength so that I can step outside of myself as to be of assistance to someone if
possible.... and I do hope that all is going well with you, my friend. Love ya. -Bob

Betty Lou,

Though I am feeling much less "apathy" now than when I wrote this poem, I do think you expressed my thoughts here very very well and I do think also that there is something that we can do here, you are even doing it with your kind response to my poem, and that is that you are being strong and sensitive and I do find so much encouragement and strength in your strength and sensitivity. My poet friend, Thank you. Thank you and God bless you. -Bob

Certainly not an abnormal reaction to a disaster Bob.  When helplessness, fear, and sorrow get all mixed up, it turns into a self-induced cocktail of time alone to introspect, and take inventory of all things that are important to us.  Sometimes that means shutting yourself off for as long as that takes in your own form of comfort.  It sure does not indicate uncaring but instead just the opposite I think anyway.  Happy New Year to you sir.

Mysteria,

Thank you so very very much for your understanding and your encouragement and I do think that you are correct in your perception here. We do need to take some time sometimes to reflect, to regroup, and to find comfort so that we can carry on and  hopefully be a comfort to someone along our way. You are a wonderful wonderful source of comfort and it is so perfectly displayed even in these words you have shared with me here. Thank you, my poet friend. Thank you.  -Bob

I was just taking a peek at this forum, when I saw the whole crowd at Spiritual is also here!

About your Apathy, sometimes when one feels helpless in times of disaster, I agree this reaction is a sort of defense mechanism. Not to confuse it with being unsympathetic, but I'm sure if you were actually there at the scene, you'd not really retire to some snug and safe shelter.  I think you're the type to be right in the midst of those who reach out their helping hands.

But your poem makes me smile, I'd like to be just as snug as a bug like you.

I had a friend on a mission trip to that area when it happened, and couldn't reach ehr for days. So I think some of the reality of the situation hit me in a different way. She's fine, praise God... and definitely changed by it. I think we all are, though. And wanting to resort to a safe place and breathe in the familiar and the lovely things in life is far from a lack of compassion. We started a change  and canned food drive at my small school... and I guess prayers and plinking coins into a jar is all we can do right now...

Excellent write

Always, Alyssa
