Across The Wild

Into the western plains they came,
Lewis and Clark and also fame,
Although they didn't know it then.
Along with them, a horde of men
And just one woman with her child,
To lead them all across the wild.
One unusual traveler who,
Was a black dog, named Seaman, too!

The prairie country they traversed
Was at its best and at its worst.
Some days storms and some days fair.
They marveled at the beauty there
And all the animals they found.
A wealth of wildlife did abound!
The Indian tribes they met, we know
Were not always moved to show
Their friendship to this traveling band,
They felt had trespassed on their land.

So many hardships felt before
They reached Pacific's fabled shore.
They sojourned there, but just the same,
They must return, the way they came,
Prepared to face the wild once more,
With some new country to explore.
The trail they blazed, soon led the way
To settlers, coming west, to stay!

Magnificent Poem, Betty Lou! I loved reading a bit of history in poetic form.

A wonderful condensed version of their trip.  And I never thought about it before that they had to turn around and do the same thing over.  I think the story always ends at their arrival.  Love, Joyce

Patricia:  I'm glad you enjoyed this. It intrigued me that they had a dog along with them. That's really what triggered the poem.
I'm a dog lover!

Dear Joyce:

Thanks for your comments.  I have always loved reading about the journey Lewis and Clark made and wonder how I would have fared on such a trek.........when I was much younger of course!

Dear Betty Lou

I am not familiar with Lewis and Clark, but I enjoyed the poem immensely.  What a lovely way of 're-writing' history.

Dear Isobel:  I'd be surprised if you knew anything about Lewis and Clark. I'm sure there are many explorers in Australia, we in this country haven't heard of. They were early explorers and really paved the way for opening up the western US to settlers.
Glad you enjoyed the poem.
