I Am Proud To Be...

What a beautiful Sunday afternoon,
How I love sitting beneath these big trees
Talking to you, my beloved husband.
The birds and the slow moving waters
Of the Clear Water Creek add to the music
Of the rustling trees... nature's orchestra.

Many tears I have shed here,
For our two babies we lost,
And for you, my beloved husband..
I can but hope, that I will not live
Long enough to have to bury
Any more of my loved ones.

I need to talk to you, quite seriously,
This piece of land I have given away.
I know you wouldn’t object,
In fact I believe that quite possibly
You will be most proud of me,
And our lives together - are secured.

Wind - our son, and Autumn Flower
Our sweet daughter, have agreed with me,
That this is indeed what you would want.
You and our two babies, no longer rest here
Alone, already ten more of our small community
Lay here, in this well tended Garden of Sleep.

The men from our neighborly, close-knit area
Built a small retaining wall, solidly of rock and mud,
For protection from scavenging wild animals.
Miles Peterson built a most beautiful inscribed gate
Donated in Loving Memory of Harlan Howard,
By wife Small Feather and children.

Wind has taken care so well, of the legalities,
This ground is now a sacred trust,
Never to be destroyed or built upon,
A haven for the departed.
I have reserved this portion of ground...
That we might one day, all be together, eternally.

How proud you would be of Wind,
He is a fine doctor,
He hung his shingle, here, in our town,
Because, if we would have had a doctor here
You might still be with us, today.
He is soon to be married, she is lovely.

Autumn Flower has gifted us with grandchildren,
Twins, a boy and a girl, she is happy.
Who would have ever thought that we would
Have ever had so much, so many ‘naysayer’s’
In our lives, wishing us nothing but evil.
How we have proved them to be so wrong.

I know all these things I tell you,
You have heard before, I tend to repeat.
I am filled with a certainty
That you have seen all that goes on,
But I need to come here and talk
It fills a void, since you have left.

Was it really thirty four years ago
That I was banished by my tribe.
Disowned by my father and mother,
For loving you, a white man
I can still feel the spittle
From my brother’s contempt, on my face.

How dirty they made us feel,
Even though we knew it was right for us.
You gave me a good life, beloved husband.
You left me and our children, with sorrow,
But regardless, well provided for.
We have never wanted for anything.

Clouds of a summer shower
Are passing over, I will be back
Next Sunday, after our church meeting.
I love to visit with you and our babies,
I must tell you... I am so proud, not insulted,
To be ‘A White Man’s Squaw’.

SPIRIT~

Your poem touched me very deeply as I sat here reading with tears in my eyes. I still feel the deep loss for my beloved son who left this world over eight years ago.
