Mountain Quail

When I went outside, I found,
Quail were calling all around.
I couldn't see their crested heads.
They hid within the flower beds.
I watched and waited for I knew
Very soon, they'd come in view.
A covey of the boldest ran,
Plump bodies marked in brown and tan,
Into some shrubbery and they
All settled there, to scratch away
And peck at what their work revealed.
As long as I remained concealed,
They went about their daily need
Of gathering their share of seed.
Then when I moved, they flew away,
But periodically, all day,
I heard their cries and saw them back,
Still looking for another snack!

Quail are adorable and this poem does them justice.  I had one in my yard a year or so ago.  He was out of his territory and I worried about him until he disappeared again. He was very tame. Love, Joyce

Dear Joyce:

We didn't have quail around here until about three years ago and suddenly there are all kinds of them. We are higher in the mountain range than they normally hang out in, I think. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Betty Lou

Thank you for painting another wonderful picture with your words. Quails are cute little birds.  When I was younger we used to have some brown quails in our aviary.

Take care.........Sue

Sue:  Thanks for replying. I wasn't aware that you had quail in Australia. I know there are many different kinds of them. Glad you have seen them and know what they are.

Betty Lou,
We have them here in Arizona. They bring such joy. Nice write.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Dear Betty Lou

You have quite a variety of bird species where you live.  It is so wonderful that you can 'view' their comings and goings.  A lovely poem.  Thank you for sharing this one with us all.
