This is a poem I wrote quite awhile back. I bit long I know, but any comments are welcome

There is a war going on
Just around the corner
And down the street from where I live.
Humans killing humans over color of skin, people of kin,
Different religions, beliefs,
The country’s flag that they bare
And the land that they have to share.
Mothers giving their babies as missiles
To the government fighting for a cause,
A break from unjustified laws
Yet wanting a pause from the screaming.
The sun beaming on a terrain
That has broken insane trying to make a gain using hate,
While making everyone else face the fate.
I once heard through the grapevine
That there’s no use in calling yourself good
If you don’t do what you should to stop the war
That’s going on just around the corner
And down the street from where you live.
Why stand there doing nothing, letting people die
Acting as if everything is great
And not a cloud in the sky
While the bullets fly into an innocent eye
You stop and make a sandwich for lunch?
You can’t call yourself good,
And then so ‘Oh, well I would if I could,’
Because either way you look at it, you can.
And I am.
I’m packing my bag, my white dove,
And going just around the corner
And down the street from where I live.
And if anyone walks through that door
And asks for my description,
You tell him I am the one with the intermixed accent,
Slightly British,
With a touch of southern charm who sometimes speaks in French.
And don’t forget to mention I’m a white Christian
African queen who dares to be seen
With the Hindus, the Muslims,
And every belief and color in between,
And lives on no grounds
Except for the ones that I believe in.
And if he asks where I am,
Tell him I am taking a stand,
And lending a peaceful hand,
Just around the corner,
And down the street from where I live.

Welcome! Beautiful, thought provoking poem! Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.
