Christmas Remembered

I remember the Christmases, long, long ago
When we weren't so wise or as much in the know
As children are now with TV and such.
We were much more naive and did not expect much.
Some candy and nuts and an orange in the toe
Was all the inside of a stocking need show.
One small gift or two was enough to bring joy
To each wide-eyed tot, whether girl-child or boy.
The height of our Christmas, the Sunday School play
Where each girl aspired to be Mary some day.
The role of tall Joseph, each small boy's desire
As he stood on his tiptoes and tried to be higher.

We saved up our pennies and counted them out
In our little town's dime store, with thrills all about.
A hankie for Mama, bandanna for Dad,
A ball for the baby, we spent all we had.
Then we patiently waited the best that we could,
For the big night and Santa. We knew we'd been good.

Oh my goodness, Joyce...

This is wonderful!  Can we just turn time back a bit and regain such wonder?

Thank you for sharing this!

Dear Joyce:  This brought back so many memories.  One in particular, when we lived on a homestead in Northern Alberta and I was four years old.  Santa brought me an embroidered hankie and a package of Wrigley's spearmint gum.  I felt truly gifted! I had wondered if he'd find me!

Wow..this brought back memories. The dime store and all. There was a dime store called Ben Franklins, and we would take our glass bottles and turn them in for a nickel and take the money and buy things for a school party gift, or for mom a special something.

Thanks everyone.  Betty there was one year in particular when money was so low, we drew names.  My gift was a box of stationery.  But I am sure none of us felt unhappy.  We were all together with good food and love. But I remember better times too.  Love, Joyce

(big angel hugs) Oh Joyce, I wish I could go back in time to when everyone was so much more into the true spirit of Christmas without all the material things and live in simplistic bliss! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Joyce, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
