Evening stuck to my window,
   escaping any explanation.
Funny,I thought to wash it just the other day.
There is no logic in my surmising,
for I never had any trouble with it before...

I had awakened at 8AM as is my everyday routine...
and as I opened up my eyes,
I thought them still then to be closed,
for the darkness was as deep as ebony !

I then noticed the glowing dial
upon the wall within my chamber and I started-
"This is not the way that things ought now to be!",
"Perhaps an eclipse?",thinking I,
"But I should've known by prior report."
I arose and placed my feet upon the floor.

And all at once a feeling then enveloped me.
There is something more than what doesn't meet the eye !
And in my standing in that blackness...
then seven steps to unseen pane...
I realized that something now had gone awry.

I slowly turned and made my way
to yonder door to see a glow.
It was dimly seen below the portal
that would lead me to surprise...
      just an illuminated crack...
like a single pair of staring sightless sleepy eyes.

I turned the knob above the slit,
and was perplexed for day was there...
touching every other object in my realm !
Looking back within the gloom,I wondered,
   "What is with my room?".
The black of night kept staring back
through yonder window like a ghost !!

I had to find an answer.
I was mad with thoughts of doom,
And as I quickly dressed,a thought leapt in my brain,
"Is this some sick and ugly joke?
If it is,then I will choke
the one who pulled this prank,
         yes,I will bring him pain!"

I quickly slipped out my backdoor
   and surveyed my quiet lot.
With eyes switching to and fro,
when they came upon the spot...
THERE!...
like a shoehorn that was haphazardly applied
to a shoe two storeys tall,
      an ebon cone encasing starlight
strangely leapt up from my wall,
      attached to my bedroom window
to make its widening end on yonder
      where a billowing horizon's fold
         evaded questions I could ponder!

I wheezed with disbelief,
and was distraught in vast and utter incredulity.
And every brain cell I possessed,
   whispered to its neighb'ring cell,
      "D'you see what I see?!".
But after several stunned,some-odd minutes,
   curiosity deadened shock,
and I seemed beckoned to advance
         and I proceeded taking stock.

Eleven steps I took...
   as though opening a book,
I looked and scanned, perused and calculated darings.
"How absurd!What could this mean?!",
I mused while taking in this scene
that seemed to rival any sci-fi I would watch on late-nite airings.

For somehow night stuck to my window,
just as plain as I could see,
and I wondered where to search
   to find an enigmatic key-

"Is there a solvent I could use?",
"Perhaps a saw would do the trick!",
"If I called up ACME GLASS,
they'd think that I was truly sick,
      surely mad,indeed insane...
that I broke my mental pane!".
Just what was there to gain
by telling any of my plight?
Surely any who are near,
have only just to use their sight
to see that things are quite off balance!
It shouldn't take a hoard of talents to know the score!

With my eyes upthrust,I gazed.
   Every ounce of me amazed.
And as if on shifting sands,
   I stood to grasp interpretation.
Furtively,I reached...
   quite full of fearful consternation.
It will take much more than hands
   to complete investigation
      of this surreality belying
         some other unknown nation.

And as I touched it...I fell under!
With a wracking roll of thunder,
      the black departed,was asunder
         while I laid unfazed,but dazed!!!...

And as I ogled yon horizon,
as if what else could be surprisin',
I watched in focused fascination
   as the night withdrew...

              ...quietly...

Each star,it seemed, did bid the sun farewell,
as if all were planned by Higher Power...
an astral sojourn by God's leave!

I blinked...as if I were pinched by mundanity,
   and I looked...
All around things were as they were...
   every day,every week,every year
that I resided in my commonplace commorancy!

"Was it truly commonplace?",I mused...
For whatever reason,my domicile was chosen
as an anchor for a cosmic visitation.
The night stuck to my window,...escaping any explanation.

Sheesh you do have a wild imagination..hehehe
This sounded like a script for Twilight Zone. du-du-du-du-du-du-du. Spooky for sure.

Thank you,Terri.I like sci-fi a lot, especially the Dune books.I had fun writing this.I started weeks ago,and finally finished it today...I was trying very hard to have a decent ending on it...don't know if it is,but I think I like how I ended on a rhyme that mirrored the very first one which was in prose.I don't know if you took notice, but I began in prose, and then the closer I came to my character's discovery, the more the rhymes increased and evolved into different meters, and then when things moved back to normalcy,I returned to prose (except for the very end, that is).It kinda makes me think of The Wizard Of Oz, when the mundane reality shots were in B&W and the fantastical ones are in vivid Technicolor! I never tried anything like this before, and, like I stated before,it was a lot of fun. There is also one word in there that I invented-"surreality".I went to look it up thinking it existed, but I couldn't find it.I thought,"There is 'reality' and 'surrealism',why not surreality?".So if you are a purist vernacularly, please forgive my poetic licence.I still say it should be a word!

Peace,Geoff
