The Winged Mermaid

I found a mermaid in the sand.
Relic from some foreign land.
Molded metal, shaped to cleave
To a ship's prow, I believe.
Seemed to me that I could hear
Whispered murmurs in my ear.
As I stood entranced, that day,
Thought I heard a soft voice say:

"I come from sea-haunts, wild and deep,
Where dolphins play and mermaids sleep.
Glazed, my eyes, with a thousand sights
I've seen on fragrant, tropic nights.
My wings were pinioned on a prow
So many years, they're frozen now
In endless and eternal flight,
Through storm and calm, through dark and light.
In dreams I see the ancient home
I left when I began to roam.
A captive I will always be,
But let me live beside the sea!"

This is a wonderful poem. Masterful. Bravo!!

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Junemac: Thank you so much for your lovely remarks. I had a niece, who found a winged mermaid while beach combing and that was the inspiration for this.  When you held it in your hand, it sent strange vibrations! At least for me!

(smiles) Oh Betty, this made me a little bit sad because of the fact the sea creatures are victims like these winged mermaids, but nevertheless the ocean still has true beauty and all else prospers! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, I found a painting that isn't a winged one but is a mermaid, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Betty, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Noah:  Thanks for reading Noah.  This winged mermaid in my poem, was made of metal and had been shaped to fit on the prow of a boat.  However, I agree with you about the plight of so many creatures of the sea.  It is very sad the way they are being depleted and wantonly killed!

I like this; the rhythym and the gentle topic.

"I am the hobbyhorse. I am the stapler in the mud, the toad in your brain. I am a head full of birds, a future full of apples."
