To My Lili Marlene:

(A/N: Though this is a German marching song from World War II, it is one that matches my feelings for someone I've cared for since my freshman year of college (2002-03) whom I cannot be with because she's seeing someone else in my ROTC unit. Vera Lynn's Lili Marlene inspired this work. Her name, she whom I speak of, isn't Lili or Marlene FYI. ~ ~ ~ ~

Freshman English, we first met in class.
No clue to the agony that would come to pass.
You were on crutches and in tears.
My heart to you went out in pity,
you alone amongst my peers.
I opened doors and carried your books.
I appreciated your thankful looks.
From You My Lili Marlene.

Four months later, our winter semester break.
When my heart switched directions for its sake.
I ran into you at the airport.
While waiting for flights to our respective courts.
The novel bought to read I completely forgot.
Since we first met I'd thought about you alot.
We talked for hours till it was time to depart.
I waited for my own flight, you had won my heart.
It Was You My Lili Marlene

I remember last Thursday to the last bitter hour.
It was a day where things began to turn sour.
With every intention of asking you out,
we studied the language of Romance.
The language of the nation France.
You asked if I'd met your boyfriend.
Right then I had a sense of the end.
I asked if you had any more need of aid.
You didn't and my kindness was repaid.
I left, composed and calm, walking in the rain.
It was when I got to my room that I felt the pain.
For My Lili Marlene.

Friday for the first time I saw you together.
You were so happy, while I was under the weather.
I could see the joyous sparkle in your eyes.
No one to comfort my silent tormented cries.
My own happiness of no significance.
May God grant you much more happiness.
You don't need me to give you any more stress.
I ask you but one favor, of slight insignificance.
Forget me not. As I never forget you.
My Lili Marlene.

paraboxer:  I did reply to this poem yesterday, but for some reason I see, it didn't show up.

I remember the song Lili Marlene well.  It was a favorite of mine during the war years.
Your poem brings it back to mind. Very touching story.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Carl, I have already read this before in the version with the lyrics of the actual song intertwining but I just wanted to say again how sorry I am for you and that I hope after this warring of heartache is over a whole new peace and love fills your heart forever as you are deserving of! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is powerful, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Carl, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

all good things come to those who wait. If your love be true and you have the patience someday things might work out for you. Good luck. I enjoyed this piece.
