Fleeing Fire

The doe was browsing unafraid,
But sudden shifts in air flow made
Her raise her head and look around.
Some strange vibrations in the ground
Caused a tension in the air.
Now carried scent of smoke, somewhere.

She left the meadow for the trees,
Her nostrils sniffing at the breeze.
Tried running for a ways and then
Stopped to survey once again.
Some inner trigger told her she
Needed to leave most rapidly!

Instinctively, she knew to go
Where the wide river's cooling flow
Might protect her from the fire.
The woods became a funeral pyre
For all the animals who tarried.
The doe herself, was feeling harried!

She crossed the river. There she turned
And watched the forest as it burned.
Her life was spared but others lost.
Part of a forest fire's cost!

Well done Trillium.  We sometimes only think of these things from the human viewpoint.  They are a tragedy for the wildlife also.  Love, Joyce

Trillium - what an eye-opening write. All God's creatures great and small. Let's not forget about the beauty and wonder they give to us. Enjoyed. Chris

Shara Rose:  Thanks so much for commenting on this.  I always feel so sad for the wildlife that is destroyed during fire season, along with my feelings for the people involved.

Joyce:  The fire season is always filled with anxiety around here.  We are in timbered country and lately, during this last season, have seen several moose wandering our area, that we feel were "fleeing fire".  Some of the fires were within 20 miles of us and a lot of the area that burned was moose country. Thanks for your response.

Thasnks Chris. I'm glad to hear you enjoy wildlife too.  We have so much around us, living near a national forest and it adds so much pleasure to our lives.

Hello Betty Lou

Your words painted a very sad but real picture.  Due to the drought we are having here we can expect many bushfires as we head towards our Summer.  We had terrible bushfires last year in Canberra and I hope we don't have a repeat of that terrible tragedy when so many lives and forests were lost.

Take care.......Sue

Hi Sue:  Nice to hear from you.  Hope your daughter had a fine birthday.

I hope you don't have the problems with fire that you did last year.  we kept reading about them and could only imagine how terrible it was for all involved.

Take care and thank for writing.

Love
Betty Lou

Run Dear Run! Actually I mean "deer"

Wow, right out of Bambi...

It must be nice to live out in the country! Iv'e visited my sister in law in Couer D' Lane some years ago. It is very beautiful in Idaho.

Well, you be careful out there OK? Winter come's pretty early around there doesn't it? And I hear that they can be pretty harsh too. Brrrrr... I can't handle the cold. That's why I'm the only hold out in California, and the rest of my family is up Oregon way.

A very nice wrtie Betty Lou!

Richy:  Thanks for your message.  Glad you've seen the Coeur d'Alene area.  We think it is beautiful too, but you're right about the winters.  They can be very harsh. The last two have been mild and we have enjoyed them.
Living in timber, we do worry every year about fire danger. We live about a mile and a half from a national forest and there are so many 4-wheelers and others who go up to explore.  Not all of them are careful. So far we haven't had any forest fires really close to us.
