CONFLICT

I am a swirling mist,
An ethereal cloud of time,
I am a spiritual historian of conflict.
I have been through history,
On the battlefronts of all wars,
Through triumphs, losses and dishonor.
There are no winners in this game
Of attack and confrontation.

War has become a necessary evil,
A way of life, to bring about peace.
Throughout centuries of bloodshed,
I have wandered and comforted
On both sides of the line,
For I favor... no one.

I am but a mere spirit, witness
To more than I wanted to see.
I have kept a careful record of life
Throughout these troubled times,
When war has raged rampant
Across the lands, throughout the world.
It is in all honesty that I simply state
My universal findings,
I but ask you this question.
The question is a simple one,
And covers all wars present, past
And those yet to be.

Do the mothers of the fallen
From those citing victory
Suffer more... than those mothers
Of those who were, are, or will be defeated?
An uncomplicated question that demands
Nothing more than a straightforward answer.
Despite race, color and creed
The agony, despair and suffering
Of those with losses of loved ones
Is identical, regardless of side
As is the color of the blood,
That is spilt, leaving traces of lost souls
Where they did fall.
Therefore you can see why
I take no stand on either side.

I am but a Chronicler of Conflict,
Where there are no winners.
I am naught but a swirling mist,
An ethereal cloud of time.

SPIRIT:  This is such an impressive poem and I have read it several times, grasping the scope of it.  Wonderful write!  I'm sure the suffering is the same, no matter what side you are looking at.

I just can't express in words the affect this poem had on me.The imergery of conflict is very deailed and rings so true. In answer to your question. A mother doesn't care which side her son is on as long as he comes home safe. Maggie

Very well thought out poem.  Yes, it matters not to mothers of the fallen whehter the outcome is win or loss.  Joyce
