Wolf Pack

It was at night when first they came
And nothing's ever been the same.
I used to wander out and back
And never see a hostile track.
I saw their footprints first, you know,
Emblazoned in fresh, fallen snow.
I recognized them right away.
It cast a shadow, let me say.

We're told that wolves will not attack
A human, but I've seen a pack
Pull down a moose, with savagery,
That left a fear inside of me
And soon I heard the chilling sound
Of howls, that came from all around.
So, I began to stay indoors
Or outside, hurry through my chores.

I'd see them skulking under trees
And sometimes on the evening breeze,
I'd hear their yips or sudden growls,
Where all I used to hear were owls.
My snowshoes hung upon the wall.
I seldom used them I recall.
The winter slowly wore away,
Till finally, one sunny day,
I couldn't stand it anymore.
I went outside and slammed the door.

I walked the woods, enjoyed the sun
And when the day was nearly done,
I turned for home and I could see
The wolf pack had been tracking me!
They wouldn't meet me eye to eye,
But they still watched as I passed by.
They go their way while I go mine
And so far, everything is fine,
Except for knowing their around
And jumping at the slightest sound!

I've been reading this all night--simply because I love it.

Gave me the impression of howlings and yellow eyes in the dark--silhouettes against rising moon.

I absolutely love this.

I always felt the howling of a wolf was loneliness.

Separation by biology--and kinship by longing.

excellent imagery.

serenity blaze:  Thank you so much for your remarks and I'm so pleased you like this! I grew up in Northern Alberta, Canada and this is a memory from that time. I live in Northern Iaho now and we have been hearing wolves howling lately, which I really enjoy. We are in the foothill country of the mountains and still lots of wildnerness here!

A good poem, I have affinity for wolves, and the images conjured up were first class.

Thank you

Shara Rose:  Thanks for your comments. I have a healthy respect for wolves and even some fear of them.  When I lived in Canada, we had so many of them around us and they often followed us, even when we were in a horse drawn wagon.  The horses were very nervous when they were nearby and we had some rather interesting encounters! Glad you liked the poem.

Although a little frightening at times, you live in a wonderous place.

Thanks,

Melton:  Thanks.  I wrote this poem, thinking about growing up in northern Canada.  Although we do hear wolves once in awhile, here in northern Idaho, we have never seen one.  We do have moose in our wetlands area though and I think they could be more dangerous than wolves!

Dear Sue:  What a treat to find your comment here.  I rarely get to any other forums, except Spiritual Journeys, so unless you send me a link, I don't get to hear from you.  Glad you liked the poem and hope things are fine with you and your family!

This is an exciting poem, but I am betting they will not attack, only keep track.  Joyce

Joyce:  Thanks and you are right.  They followed us often but never made hostile moves.  Fortunately!

I have traveled across Canada and the north west United States.  Although I have passed through these areas, I have not had the opportunity to stay and get to know the wildlife like you can.

I am sure it is a thrill yet very unsettling and scarey to be observed by wolves and tracked!  Wow!

lol BTW, I trained my dog with cheese, perhaps they would rather have cheese than you!

But on the other hand, depending on where you live, there are many restricitons about feeding the wild animals. :p

You are fortunate to have this close experience with such remarkable creatures---(of the night)

Lady Moiraine:  Thanks for your comments and I enjoyed hearing from you.  When I lived in northern Alberta, we never even thought about feeding any of the wild animals we encountered!  There was an abundance of natural food for them.  It was pretty unsettled country at that time and mankind had not made much of an impact on it. I am so glad I got to see it then!
