I walked
along the river today
overflowing its banks
and purging itself
of deadwood and debris

the current
was treacherous swift
so out of control
despite its
inevitable destination

just a “roaring drunk”
trying to go somewhere
anywhere
the way I am
most of the time
these days

and then I saw the beaver
paddling his way upstream
sticks in his teeth
sure and determined
to dam up the flow
a slow and steady builder
astride a wild and raging
deluge of confusion

and the Great Spirit
told me in my heart
that he
was me
just trying
to get sober

Thanks for reading, Maree.
Just recently got it straightened out. Thanks to you, again.

Thanks, Passing Shadows.
I like your screen, it makes me think of wild geese fying overhead.

The imagines this brings to mind are .... wonderful   I had to stop and think, did I want to say wonderful or horrific?  Wonderful with the imagery, horrific because I know people like the beaver.  I think I have to pass this poem along.

Thankyou

I liked the images in this poem, and I can definately relate, having just recently celebrated my 21st birthday.  Good write.

i really think we stone cold sober people are often just as confused as the drunk.as we still struggle to plug the damnable flow...

i really identified with this...

thanks.

Vivid imagry here.  Very well done.  Though I don't have that particular problem, we all do have debris to unload just like that mighty river.  Enjoyed.  Joyce

I've recently been in a writing class and told to use more metaphors/metaphoric language in my poetry.
Thank you for showing me a perfect example.
