A Scarecrow's Lot

I stand out here, in this same spot,
No matter if it's cold or hot
And other scarecrows live here too,
To share with me, my backyard view.
I see their shadows on the ground,
But I'm not made to turn around,
So I can never see their face,
Or if they're dressed in rags or lace.

Every spring, I get new clothes.
They're someone's cast-offs, I suppose,
But I am glad to have the change
And have my mistress re-arrange
My hair-do, with another style,
So I look nifty for awhile!

This season, I am dressed in red.
A matching kerchief for my head,
But by next year, when flowers rise,
My hair will hang down in my eyes.
The color faded from my dress.
Such is a scarecrow's lot, I guess!

I take great pride in job well done.
When berries ripen in the sun,
The birds that flock from field and hill,
If not for me, would eat their fill!
Then too, of course, some credit goes
To other brave and loyal scarecrows,
Who give their lives, so you may eat,
Those luscious berries, red and sweet!

Joyce:  Thanks.  I enjoy my scarecrows and people passing by often think they are real
people.

Michelle:  Thanks and glad you liked this. I have a lot of fun with my scarecrows in the berry patch.  They are life size and often are mistaken for real people.

LOL... this is delightful! *S* Maybe you could turn them towards each other every now and then... just so they could know their neighbors? *S* Well done! *S*

Dear Marge:  My scarecrows are a source of great amusement in the family and surrounding neighbors.  I have a great time dressing them every spring and I haunt the second hand shops looking for wigs and really gaudy togs!  One of my rites of spring.  Thanks and glad it brought you a smile.

Love
Betty Lou
